Job Summary
This is a Trust Doctor in Respiratory Medicine position at registrar level, based at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. The role is available until August 2026 and offers an exciting opportunity for a doctor interested in pursuing a career in respiratory medicine.
Responsibilities
- Day‑to‑day management of inpatients.
- Consultant ward rounds.
- Participation in specialist and general respiratory clinics.
- Supervision of junior doctors.
- Teaching junior doctors and medical students.
- Provision of out‑of‑hours and on‑call cover in acute/general internal medicine.
- Review of referrals requested by other physicians or teams.
- Responding to queries from general practitioners and handling correspondence and results.
Additional Duties
The post will be based primarily at The Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, with some work at West Cumberland Hospital when required. It involves both outpatient and inpatient duties, regular commitment to the medical admissions unit, and a special interest in sleep, asthma or pleural diseases (other specialist interests are welcomed).

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council and licence to practice at time of application
- Full MRCP (UK) or equivalent
- Completed Core Medical Training with satisfactory outcome at final ARCP
Desirable Qualifications
- Post‑graduate teaching experience or qualification
- Positive distinction for presentations/publications, prizes, awards or scholarships
- Higher degree or other relevant academic qualifications
Training & Skills
- Appropriate Foundation training and Core Training experience
- ALS provider
- Sound knowledge of both respiratory and acute medicine, evidence‑based clinical decision making and risk management
- Capacity to prioritise clinical need, organise workload and delegate responsibilities
- Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required for the role
Experience
- Completed at least 2 years full‑time training after foundation years in core medical training or equivalent (or 18 months if MRCP diploma achieved)
- Demonstrable written and spoken English skills
- Evidence of continuous professional development and participation in audit projects
- Experience in acute medical take‑on within the past 6‑12 months
