Job summary

A leading retail grocery company in Shrewsbury is seeking a Shift Leader to manage store operations and ensure exceptional customer service. You will lead a team in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining store standards and supporting colleagues. Salary: Shift Leader rate of pay starts from £14.76 an hour; this increases to £15.97 for stores inside the M25. Additional payments may also apply depending on location.

It’s our policy to offer new colleagues joining us a minimum of 16 guaranteed hours each week, but if you’d like to work fewer hours (to a minimum of 12) we have opportunities for this too and would still love to hear from you.

Core Responsibilities
  • Work in a fast‑paced retail environment, with a variety of products.
  • Take ownership of running duty shifts, coordinating the team to deliver a clean, well‑stocked store that exceeds customer expectations.
  • Be there for customers, listening to them and ensuring they leave the store with what they came for.
  • Look for ways to improve service, including coaching colleagues and giving feedback.
  • Guide and support colleagues in‑store, ensuring a safe place to work and shop.
  • Maintain a good understanding of store performance and assist managers in delivery of actions that improve operations.
  • Lead from the front, setting a great example for colleagues in everything you do.
  • Coordinate the store team to deliver an easy, fuss‑free shopping experience.
  • Support your colleagues, ensuring they deliver daily priorities and take regular breaks.
  • Open and close the store, and complete duty cover, ensuring all decisions made are right for everyone’s safety.
  • Be the go‑to person for colleagues in the absence of a manager for day‑to‑day queries.
  • Keep the store clean, tidy and well‑presented.
  • Support managers to coordinate seasonal, community and charity events.
  • Contribute to a great team atmosphere that is inclusive of everyone.
  • Provide great customer service, listening to customers and putting them first.
  • Keep the team well‑informed and up to speed on communications, changes or updates.
  • Stay knowledgeable about store performance and look for ways to improve and simplify operations.
  • Co‑ordinate store improvements, removing obstacles that may hinder service.
  • Follow health and safety routines and procedures, ensuring colleagues do the same.
  • Recognise and celebrate colleagues within the team who provide great service.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must be 18 or over. Additional age requirements may apply for early mornings, late evenings, or specific area roles (warehouse, beer & wine, counters, bakery, driving).
  • Great role model: always delivering thoughtful customer service that meets every customer’s needs.
  • Strong, inclusive leadership: build long‑lasting, positive relationships with all team members.
  • Clear communicator, comfortable using various methods to keep the team informed.

  • Experience in retail management or similar supervisory role preferred.
