Job description

Join to apply for the Staff Platform Engineer, UK role at Ashby

We’re looking for a curious, rigorous, problem‑hungry platform engineer (who codes!) to carry the ball as we bring Ashby to the big leagues. Ashby builds software that lets talent teams build an efficient, delightful, respectful hiring process. Similarly, you’re an engineer who wants to build a “paved road” that excellent engineering teams can safely take to the moon and back.

Base Pay Range

This role is for UK based candidates. Base pay range is based on your skills and experience – talk with your recruiter to learn more.

About the Role and How We Work

Hi 👋 I’m Colin, Head of EMEA Engineering. I’ve spent years leading engineering teams in startups, always close to infrastructure. As a Platform Engineer at Ashby, you’ll dive into scaling problems, add new capabilities to our platform, and think about how our entire team interacts with infrastructure. We value infrastructure‑as‑code and ownership; our engineers own projects end‑to‑end and ship with minimal oversight.

  • Optimize our homegrown ultra‑dynamic recruiting DSL‑to‑SQL compiler and create tools to help developers use it.
  • Create automated guardrails for the security and privacy of our customer data.
  • Help our developers ship features fast through canary deploys, gradual rollouts, and feature flags, while keeping complexity manageable.
  • Work with the business and engineering team to define SLOs and implement corresponding SLIs.
  • Ensure all communication with external services supports retries and circuit‑breakers.
  • Implement the infrastructure to support an event‑driven architecture and data warehouse.
You Should Apply If
  • You never stop. You get obsessed with problems that don’t yet make sense, searching every possibility until the explanation dawns.
  • You don’t take shortcuts. You speak up for the future user and the edge case, standing with product engineers to give them the power and knowledge to do more.
  • You care about what you do and the team you do it with, and want to work with people who make you better.
  • You’ve built infrastructure at a later stage than Ashby is now – you know how to deal with millions of data points and have automated provisioning, monitoring, and release processes.
  • You’re a Swiss‑army‑knife: infrastructure updates, security enforcements, database optimization, Kubernetes debugging, and digging through TypeScript traces. You may not feel like an expert at every skill, but that appeals to you.
Role
  • You should not apply if you want a lead or manager to make the final technical decision.
  • You hate SQL – we use it heavily for reporting and advising on data models.
  • You do not want to code – reviewing and submitting code changes is part of the day‑to‑day.
  • Communication happens only in live meetings – we run an async culture and rely on written communication and code.
  • You’ve never delivered a project on your own without frequent updates; we have no project managers.
Technology Stack

TypeScript (frontend & backend), Node.js, React, Apollo GraphQL, Postgres, Redis. We also use Datadog and Sentry on AWS infra.

What We’re Building

We designed Ashby to give TA teams a powerful, intelligent hiring experience. Our platform is used by customers such as Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake, with tens of millions of ARR and over 2500 customers.

Engineering Culture

We value minimal process with ownership, deliberate communication, tools & abstractions that give us leverage, and diversity. Our CI/CD takes ~10 min, we deploy at least 15 x a day, and we focus on building impactful features with great developer experience.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • 10‑year exercise window for stock options.
  • Unlimited PTO, and encouragement to take it.
  • Minimum 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave; longer outside the US per regional requirements.
  • Generous equipment, software, and office furniture budget.
  • $100 /month education budget.
  • Full‑coverage health insurance in the US; supplemental health insurance elsewhere.
