Job Summary
The Specialty Doctor is responsible for the consultants in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, liaises with nursing, professional and technical, social work, managerial and administrative staff. This post supports the ED & SDEC departments and Gynaecology emergency patients who attend, and also supports BSOTS triaging.
Main duties of the job
- Manage the labour ward and the gynae emergencies with the support of the obstetrics and gynaecology consultant
- Be the point of contact for the ED and SDEC departments to ensure Gynaecology & Obstetrics patients are seen, providing in‑reach support
- Work with professional colleagues and managers to ensure efficient running of services
- Work closely with other specialist teams
- Assist with service improvements and development of business plans to inform future strategic direction
- Participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities in the Trust
- Provide educational supervision to junior doctors in training, including induction, formal appraisals, supervision of learning portfolios, career advice
- Provide bedside and teaching for Junior Doctors and other multidisciplinary team members
- Participate in Friday afternoon formal teaching rota based on RCOG curriculum, new guidelines and research
- Assist in PROMPT course training annually
- Undertake personal development and mandatory training

Person Specification
Essential
- Qualifications: MBBS or recognised equivalent, Full GMC Registration, at least four years' full‑time postgraduate training, with at least two years in a relevant speciality.
- Training & Experience: Completed training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology or relevant speciality; teaching junior medical staff; evidence of CPD; appraisal and revalidation within GMC guidelines; NHS experience.
- Physical requirements: Willing to meet travel requirements; meet professional health requirements.
- Academic achievements: Evidence of participation in audit; research publication.
- Management experience: Ability to work with colleagues across specialties; familiarity with clinical governance.
- Personal qualities: Communication & language skills; decisiveness/accountability; interpersonal skills; non‑judgemental approach; flexibility; resilience; thoroughness; initiative; probity; team player.
