Role

Due to the growth of the business, we are now seeking an additional electronic design engineer to become part of our highly talented team based in the Bristol & Bath Science Park.

You will design and develop a wide range of electronic hardware products to meet the customer requirements.

Since we work on a very wide array of products aimed at various market sectors, the ideal candidate will be flexible and willing to learn new skills as required by the project specification.

The ideal candidate will also be self‑motivated and able to work with minimal supervision & guidance (depending on experience).

The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of full‑lifecycle product design & development. They must also have strong problem‑solving skills and a positive attitude.

We are seeking candidates with practical hands‑on laboratory‑based experience of electronic circuit design, testing, fault finding and modifying. Candidates should also be comfortable building and testing prototype circuits when necessary.

We are seeking many of the skills listed below. However we also encourage candidates to discuss any relevant skills not listed here.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Essential skills – Fundamental skills required for all applicants
  • Circuit schematic design and PCB layout (Preferably Altium),
  • Electronic component selection and design calculations, power, voltage, current rating etc…
  • Prototyping circuits using evaluation/demo boards were possible.
  • Use of all standard lab equipment - Oscilloscopes, Signal generators, Spectrum analysers, multimeters etc…
  • Circuit board performance testing & functional acceptance testing.
  • Design and assembly of custom test apparatus, looms/harnesses & jigs as required.
Specialist skills
  • Low‑frequency precision instrumentation amplifiers,
  • BJT, JFET, MOFET, IGBT, SCR, SiC & GaN semiconductor characteristics and operation.
  • HF & UHF oscillators & RF transmitters & receiver. SAW and crystal‑based designs.
  • Low EMI emission & susceptibility design practices.
  • Closed‑loop control theory, PID control principles and stability criteria.
  • Processor, PIC & FPGA peripheral compatibility and level translation
  • Processor architecture, ARM, CISC, RISC, DSP etc. Characteristics and operation.
  • Communication protocols SPI, I2C, CAN,
  • FPGA design – Schematic entry or VHDL, test bench writing.
  • Memory devices: Flash, EPROM, EEPROM, DDR characteristics and operation.
  • Optimum high‑speed signal propagation and signal integrity design practices.
  • Wireless communication experience (GSM/GPRS, Wi‑Fi, LoRa, Bluetooth, IoT)
  • Power converter design, DC‑DC & AC‑DC characteristics and principles of various topologies.
  • Primary to secondary galvanic isolation techniques, including feedback isolation techniques
  • MOFET, IGBT, SCR, SiC & GaN semiconductor characteristics and operation.
  • Gate drive (MOSFET & IGBT) techniques for optimum power efficiency and device protection.
  • Closed‑loop control theory, PID control principles and stability criteria.
  • EMC standards & Low Voltage Directives
System Integration & 19” Rack / Automated Test Equipment (ATE)
  • Design and integration of modular electronic assemblies into 19” rack systems.
  • Development of automated test solutions for production, validation and qualification environments.
  • Design and documentation of custom interconnects, backplane wiring, harnessing and patch‑panels.
  • Experience with relay / matrix switching for automated signal routing.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation control interfaces (USB, RS‑232, GPIB, Ethernet, LAN/LXI) and SCPI command sets.
Qualifications
  • Candidates will be degree‑qualified in a related discipline
  • At least 7+ years relevant industrial design experience
  • Relevant experience gained in academia will also be considered.
