Overview
Senior Aerodynamics Surface Design Engineer – F1 role at Bold. You will collaborate with Aerodynamicists, Design Engineers, CFD Analysts, Manufacturing, Testing and Development Teams to integrate aerodynamic design within the wider engineering and operational functions of the Formula 1 team. You will translate aerodynamic theories into detailed CAD models and work with CFD analysts to run simulations and analyses, ensuring designs are validated with CFD specialists and simulation engineers.
What You Will Do
- Designing Surfaces: Create and design aerodynamic surfaces using CATIA, focusing on wings, diffusers, sidepods, and other aerodynamic components.
- Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with aerodynamicists, engineers and team members to understand performance requirements, constraints and evolving design objectives.
- CAD Modeling: Develop detailed CAD models and prototypes for aerodynamic surfaces, ensuring they meet aerodynamic targets and manufacturing feasibility.
- Optimization: Refine designs based on simulation results, wind tunnel data and real-world performance data to maximize aerodynamic efficiency and downforce while minimizing drag.
- Prototyping and Testing: Collaborate with manufacturing to create prototypes for wind tunnel testing and on-track evaluations.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed design, simulation and test documentation and report progress to the broader engineering team.
- Regulatory Compliance: Stay updated with FIA regulations and guidelines to ensure designs comply with governing rules.
- Problem Solving: Address design challenges, troubleshoot issues, and propose innovative solutions within regulatory constraints.
- Continuous Learning: Keep up with advancements in aerodynamics, materials and manufacturing processes to enhance car performance.
Qualifications
- Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent R&D design experience.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in a similar role.
- Motorsport background.
- At least 2 years of hands-on CATIA experience for advanced surface design and robust model construction.
- Proficiency in advanced CATIA surface modeling techniques for intricate aerodynamic models.
- Ability to maintain a structured design tree within CATIA for efficient model management.
- Ability to create sturdy and robust CATIA models.
- Experience developing functional prototypes using various manufacturing methods for aerodynamic testing needs.
- FIA regulatory understanding.
- Proficiency in English.
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with composite materials and their properties.
- Additional courses or training in aerodynamics specialization.
- Strong understanding of Fluid Dynamics principles to interpret simulations and refine designs.
