Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic Flow Sorting Scientist to join our High Throughput Laboratory Operations team. The role will lead the buildout and running of our flow cytometry provision, operating and maintaining flow cytometry and cell sorting equipment. In so doing, the candidate will support both the High Throughput team and Assay Development team with experimental design and execution.

A successful candidate will be comfortable with cross-functional working, dipping in and out of ongoing projects to support delivery of prioritized work packages. The candidate will be a self-starter, able to thrive in a fast-paced, action-oriented team environment and have a clear passion for somatic genomics. They will have demonstrated evidence of agility in their scientific work and an overt attitude of positivity when facing challenges. They will be dedicated to learning and development, embrace feedback and be open to working outside their comfort zone.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot flow cytometry and cell sorting equipment, ensuring optimal performance for platform activities.
  • Optimize and transition effective protocols into use for High Throughput flow cytometry and cell/nuclei sorting projects.
  • Maintain up to date Technical Procedures and SOPs for the Flow cytometry platform
  • Provide technical support and training to other team members on the operation of flow cytometry and cell sorting equipment.
  • Conduct cell sorting to isolate specific cell/nuclei populations, with high purity and viability.
  • Perform sample preparation and dissociation of human tissues and cells.
  • Support the design and/or adaptation of tissue dissociation and cell/nuclei isolation methods to meet project goals.
  • Support the design and validation of antibody panels.
  • Maintain compliance with the Human Tissue Act (HTA) and COSHH regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members across various functional areas.
Key Skills and Experience
  • BSc or MSc degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or microbiology, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years' hands‑on experience of flow cytometry and cell sorting.
  • Deep understanding of the maintenance and set up of flow cytometry and cell sorting equipment.
  • Experience in working with multi‑colour antibody panels for flow cytometry.
  • Knowledge and experience of working under HTA regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Use of laboratory information management systems (Benchling preferred).
  • Experience in designing multi‑colour flow panels.
  • Experience in spectral flow cytometry.
  • Experience in the isolation and sorting of nuclei.
  • Experience with optimization of tissue dissociation methods.
  • Experience with next generation sequencing library preparation and other downstream molecular biology processing.
  • Previous experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical industry setting.
  • Experience working within a flow cytometry and cell sorting facility.
  • Experience working with digital productivity tools such as Notion, Trello or Jira.
