Job Description
Reports to: Principal Engineer
The main function of the role is to design the substation primary engineering for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
Design
- Produce a comprehensive suite of design drawings for Grid and Primary substations.
- Prepare technical specifications for Electrical plant and providing associated electrical designs for the substation upgrades, and new substations projects from 11kV up to an including 132kV.
- Produce substation design feasibility reports, cost estimate, layouts, GA’s as well as the preparation of plant specifications that include transformers, switchgear and battery systems.
- Interpreting technical documentation relating to the design of electrical substations.
- Reviewing designs produced by suppliers and client to ensure designs are technically compliant and in line with current legislation and policies.
- Ensure designs are delivered in accordance with the contract to the satisfaction of the client and the specifications.
Project Management
- Accept ownership of work to be done:
- Interface with other discipline e.g. Civils, Protection, HV cables and OHL engineers
- Liaise with Designers and CAD technician on drawings requirements.
- Attend and contribute to Design Review / Contract Close-out Meetings, ensuring that appropriate items are actioned in a timely manner.
- Co-ordinate submission of reports, drawings and designs.
- Ensure adherence to LSTC procedures and processes.
- Co-ordinate and liaise with all other departments, disciplines, external agencies and authorities to ensure all substation related work is in accordance with the clients agreed brief and programme.
Systems Development
- Development of the company’s substation capability. Including provision of training and review where necessary.
- Responsible for maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of substation design practice and regulations and the impact this has on the industry.
- Input into the continued development of LSTC Group procedures.
Quality Systems and Health & Safety
- Ensure that relevant Health and Safety risks and hazards are identified, made known to the project team and properly managed.
- Production of all CDM documentation.
- Ensure the provision of deliverables that demonstrate all related work completed complies with the client’s brief.
- Ensure all QA environmental and Safety Documentation is prepared and issued in accordance with company (and client) procedures.
Other Responsibilities
- Carry out reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Operations.
- Willing to work at other LSTC Group or Client Offices as required.
Qualifications and experience
Qualifications:
- Degree – Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification(s) and/or relevant experience in a related field.
- Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering, with at least five years of relevant experience.
- Ideally Member of Professional Institution.
- Ideally a Chartered Engineer.
Experience:
- Proven experience of HV and EHV Plant specification, 11kV up to and including 400kV, design, load calculations and rating studies.
- Proven experience in HV and EHV substation design (both AIS & GIS), from 11kV up to and including 400kV.
- Knowledge of engineering standards and technical policies for HV and EHV plant, substations (including earthing and electrical clearances).
