Job summary

A leading technical services provider in the UK is seeking a Pre-construction Manager to lead the pre-construction phase for data centre projects. You will work closely with a dedicated team on projects valued up to £10m, applying your engineering expertise in a dynamic environment. The ideal candidate has at least 5 years of relevant experience and a degree in engineering. Strong analytical and teamwork skills are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in M&E engineering, ideally in critical infrastructure.
  • Based in or around Manchester, willing to travel and have full working rights in the UK.
  • Experience with Data Centre installations is preferable but not essential.

Overview

With the continued expansion of our award-winning technical services business, Sudlows, working throughout the UK, we have a fantastic opportunity for a Pre-construction Manager to join our successful business. The role involves leading the pre-construction phase of data centre opportunities, working alongside a dedicated pre-construction team with support from senior management within our wider critical infrastructure team. We have over 200 staff and are expanding; Sudlows is an equal opportunities employer and values diversity in our workforce.

Role purpose: As part of the Tier II Sudlows Critical Infrastructures Team, you will support the enquiry/bid phase and lead the pre-construction phase of Tier II projects alongside the Head of Projects and wider pre-construction support teams. You will work on projects with values up to £10m, using the latest data centre technologies and contributing to award-winning projects as part of a forward-thinking team.

Responsibilities
  • Support the pre-construction team on enquiries and new opportunities, coordinating technical design, estimation and scope development.
  • Lead the pre-construction phase of awarded projects, from award to delivery handover.
  • Ensure that technical and pricing submission deadlines are met.
  • Understand and reflect the commercial performance requirements of project opportunities at business sign-off.
  • Provide ongoing support to the delivery and operational teams as required.
  • Lead and coordinate design development through RIBA Stages 3–5.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for value engineering.
  • Ensure technical designs and solutions comply with relevant industry and client standards.
  • Manage and mitigate commercial and design risk during early project development.
  • Chair design workshops and design team meetings during the pre-construction phase.
  • Attend and host on-site meetings, project walk-throughs and site surveys.
  • Manage stakeholders including clients, consultants, external design partners and specialist subcontractors during the pre-construction phase.
  • Collaborate with the procurement team to manage procurement of essential equipment and services during pre-construction.
  • Develop pre-construction and tender programmes for accurate project management resource planning and costs.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or related discipline.
  • Based in or around Manchester, willing to travel and have full working rights in the UK.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in M&E engineering, ideally in critical infrastructure.
  • Experience with AutoCAD/Revit is beneficial but not essential.
  • Experience with programming software such as ASTA PowerProject, P6, MS Project is beneficial but not essential.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Able to work within a team, prioritise tasks and manage time to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with Data Centre installations is preferable but not essential.
