Job description

Do you thrive on accuracy and attention to detail?

Can you manage deadlines while juggling multiple priorities?

Are you confident with payroll systems and keen to support colleagues?

At StepChange, our Payroll Team plays a crucial role in ensuring every colleague is paid correctly and on time. We are seeking a Payroll Technician to provide essential support across payroll and pensions processes. This is an opportunity to join a team that underpins the smooth running of our charity, helping us deliver financial wellbeing to thousands of people every year.

What You’ll Do

As a Payroll Technician, you will manage employee changes such as new starters, leavers and contract amendments, while calculating pay adjustments including overtime, statutory entitlements and deductions. You’ll also administer benefits like season tickets, holiday purchase, cycle-to-work and childcare vouchers. Month-end responsibilities will include reviewing and balancing payroll, preparing journals for the accounting system, and ensuring all work is completed within the set timetable. You’ll respond promptly to payroll queries via email, phone or face-to-face, support colleagues in accessing e-payslips, and maintain accurate payroll records. Pension communications will need to be delivered in line with legislation, with guidance provided to employees when required. Alongside these tasks, you’ll carry out general administration, adhere to policies and FCA conduct rules.

About You

We’re looking for someone with up-to-date knowledge of HMRC regulations and experience working in a payroll department of similar size and complexity. You’ll be highly numerate, able to meet strict deadlines, and confident using Excel, Word, Outlook and payroll systems such as Moorepay. Strong communication skills, self-motivation and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team are essential. An understanding of basic accounting principles and a payroll qualification would be advantageous, but not essential.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

Equality, diversity, and inclusion are incredibly important to us; we have a culture of belonging. We’re always looking to increase the diversity of our workforce to ensure we can provide the best service possible for everyone. It’s not just about the professional experience you bring – we’re interested in who you are and your potential. If there’s an adjustment to our recruitment process that would help you to be your best, speak to our team and they’ll be happy to help.
