Job Overview

As an Operating Department Orderly you will support all nursing and surgical activity in theatres. You will transport conscious or unconscious patients safely between areas, maintain cleanliness and order in operating and recovery rooms, ensure stock levels are adequate, and support medical gas management. You will also assist with the preparation and cleaning of theatre trolleys, maintain scrub suites and respond to medical gas alarms. The role requires a proactive, team‑oriented attitude and a commitment to safe, high‑quality care.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Transport conscious or unconscious patients safely between acute care areas, operating theatres and recovery rooms.
  • Maintain cleaning and tidiness of operating department and associated rooms, reporting any items needing repair.
  • Clean all theatres, anaesthetic rooms, floors, walls, sluice areas on a daily basis or as required.
  • Remove clinical waste, linen and sharps bins within theatres and prepare them for disposal.
  • Check theatre patient trolleys after use, ensure they have a filled oxygen cylinder and mask and report any problems.
  • Keep changing rooms tidy, change linen fijns as needed, and replenish scrub suites.
  • Maintain a stock of medical gas cylinders, return empty cylinders to the store, respond to gas alarms and change nitrogen oxide, oxygen and medical air cylinders as required.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
  1. Undertake any other duties that may be requested by your manager which are commensurate with the grade to facilitate smooth department operations.
  2. Adhere to the guidelines, policies and standards of the unit and trust.
  3. Take reasonable care for safety of yourself and others, ensuring statutory and departmental safety regulations are upheld.
  4. Take responsibility for your own learning and development; attend all statutory and mandatory training, and participate in an orientation programme and appraisal review.
  5. Attend and participate in team meetings.
Person Specification
  • Literate and numerate.
  • Evidence of customer care experience.
  • Level 2 NVQ or equivalent relevant to the area.
Flexible – can work the shifts required by the department
  • Flexibility across night shifts (22:00‑06:00), lates and weekends.
