We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our community mental health team. We are looking for someone with a passion for mental health and supporting people to reach their goals and work toward their recovery. You will be part of a dynamic, supportive and diverse multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

You will be a caring and considerate person, enthusiastic about working in mental health. You will have an allocated caseload of patients whom you will support through their recovery process through a combination of one-to-one and group work. You will support them to learn new skills and manage day‑to‑day tasks using a range of interventions within the community.

You will be supported to develop your skills and knowledge of mental health and the role of the Occupational Therapy Technician within the community mental health team. The team currently has two Occupational Therapists who you will work closely with.

We have robust Occupational Therapy leadership. You will receive regular caseload supervision from an Occupational Therapist, opportunities for clinical and professional development, and a peer support group encouraged for skill development. The team is committed to providing safe, sound and supportive services.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist the support and recovery of service users within the Community Mental Health Team, providing a range of psychosocial interventions across self‑care, productivity, and leisure, and reducing emotional distress.
  • Work predominantly with service users presenting highly complex mental health needs, including those displaying challenging or verbally aggressive behavior, requiring sensitivity, tact, and effective communication.
  • Follow the CMHT operating procedures; reference qualified staff for guidance and advice.
  • Under supervision and guidance of the Occupational Therapist, support a pre‑directed care plan for service users, contribute to the implementation of clinical care, and provide feedback on progress.
  • Assume responsibility for safe use of all equipment and support service users in practical activities (e.g., domestic work, relaxation, daily living tasks). These may be one‑off sessions or ongoing programmes, sometimes requiring light physical effort.
  • Undertake individual therapeutic activities with clients to promote independence and wellbeing, assessing responses and amending programmes as necessary, and escalating clinical issues to the Occupational Therapist when needed.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and service providers to support service users, communicate clinical risks, and, if necessary, contribute to ongoing risk reduction and management.
  • Gather information from service users/carers for the care plan process, communicating effectively with clients who have barriers to understanding or are highly emotive, presenting challenging behaviour.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic records (e.g., patient notes and contacts on RIO) in accordance with professional and Trust standards.
  • Use clinical supervision to discuss and reflect on practice, maintain up-to-date knowledge of national guidelines, standards, legislation, and professional developments in treating service conditions.
  • Implement Trust policies and procedures within your area of practice, suggesting changes to working practices within the CMHT.
  • Engage in your Personal Development Conversation, complete preparation documentation, and participate actively in the appraisal process.
  • Maintain clinical governance standards, including participation in audits, clinical supervision, and research into practice.
  • Meet training objectives and maintain mandatory training.
  • Demonstrate a reflective learning style in the workplace, documenting progress in a personal portfolio.
