As a Lead Engineer at The Open University, you will spearhead technical innovation and excellence within our engineering teams. You’ll take end-to-end technical ownership of complex products, guiding them from concept to completion while ensuring they align with both The Open University objectives and technical standards. Leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers, architects, and specialists, you will be pivotal in designing and delivering scalable, high-quality software solutions.
The role sits within the Engineering Profession, reporting into a Group Engineering Lead. In this strategic role, you will help shape the technical roadmap, make key architectural decisions, and integrate emerging technologies to ensure our systems are robust, secure, and efficient. Working closely with architects, you will take ownership of the local architecture and promote a build-run-own mindset.
You’ll mentor and inspire your team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration, enhancing productivity and operational efficiency, including delivery of operational Five S's expectations (5S - Security, Stability, Scalability, Speed, Spend.)

Key Skills and Experience:
We are seeking an experienced engineer with proven expertise in modern digital development, including cloud, DevOps, automation, TDD, infrastructure as code, and MACH architecture (Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native, and Headless). Must be skilled in using observability tools and effective in leading hybrid teams across permanent and offshore/nearshore settings.

It is anticipated that a hybrid working pattern can be adopted for this role, where the successful candidate can work from home and the office. However, as this role is contractually aligned to our Milton Keynes office it is expected that some attendance in the office will be required when necessary and in response to business needs. We’d expect this to be on average once per month.
We anticipate that interviews for this role will be taking place online via Microsoft Teams during the week commencing 9 February 2026.
