Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases

Duration: 12 months rolling fixed term

Rota: Full time with on calls @ LRI & LGH

UK Experience & minimum MRCP part 1 is ESSENTIAL to apply.

The post is based at Leicester General Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary and will be for 1-year fixed term initially. You will be expected to be part of the medical on-call rota at the General for two weeks in a row; followed by two weeks of clinical research time at the Royal.

We particularly welcome applicants who have a future interest in applying for an academic clinical career and/or specialty training in Infection (Infectious Diseases / Microbiology / Virology). There is potential in this role to undertake a higher research degree (MD).

The Pareek group is well-established research group nationally, with work spanning infectious diseases screening and prevention programmes (especially TB, HIV and viral hepatitis); HIV and cardiovascular outcomes (led by Dr Joshua Nazareth) respiratory viruses (led by Dr Daniel Pan) as well as healthcare worker outcomes, TB and migrant health (led by Dr Christopher Martin) and health-inequalities/policy research. The research role involves designing and conducting observational cohort or interventional studies in any of these fields, applying epidemiological and economic evaluation methods, working with healthcare and community partners and contributing to policy‑relevant outputs.

Main duties of the job
  • Participate on the GIM on-call rota at Leicester General Hospital as required at the level of a middle grade specialist registrar.
  • Be comfortable working with clinical data and population health datasets, potentially across migrant/underserved populations with interest in ethnicity and health inequalities.
  • Be interested in developing skills in epidemiological methods.
  • Be able to collaborate with clinical services, public health bodies and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Be comfortable contributing to published outputs, grant applications and stakeholder engagement.
  • The post-holder will be encouraged to attend local and regional ID teaching, as well as attend and present at national and international meetings, in line with other specialty trainees in Infection.
  • Training will be given in the care and management of patients with a wide range of general medicines. Direct supervision will be via the on-call consultant. The post-holder will be allocated a clinical and educational supervisor (ID consultant).
