Job summary

A leading environmental services company in the UK is seeking an experienced Health Physics Team Leader to oversee the Health Physics team at their Low Level Waste Repository site. This role involves leading radiological surveys, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and managing the training of staff in radiation protection. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in a nuclear facility and a strong understanding of radiation monitoring and safety protocols, as well as essential certifications such as City & Guilds Level 3 in Radiation Protection.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced Health Physics Team Leader to lead and support our Health Physics team at Nuclear Waste Services based on our Low Level Waste Repository site.

In this role, you’ll help protect people, the environment, and site operations by ensuring effective radiological monitoring and maintaining compliance with safety regulations. If you’re a confident leader with strong technical expertise in radiation protection, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the UK’s low‑level waste management mission.

  • Lead routine and task‑specific radiological surveys across site.
  • Monitor radiological conditions, investigate abnormalities, and ensure accurate reporting.
  • Coordinate HP coverage, allocate resources, and support emergency response arrangements.
  • Oversee training, development, and competency of HP staff.
  • Manage contamination control, personnel monitoring, and clearance activities.
  • Supervise work in high‑contamination areas and ensure correct PPE/RPE use.
  • Support safe handling of radioactive sources and respond to changing radiological conditions.

Essential Skills, Qualifications & Experience
Experience
  • Extensive experience as a Health Physics Monitor or equivalent within a nuclear facility.
  • Proven supervisory or team leadership experience in radiological safety.
  • Designation as a classified worker under the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR) 2017.
Knowledge
  • Advanced understanding of radiation types, sources, associated hazards, and control measures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of radiation and contamination monitoring equipment.
  • Familiarity with site‑specific safety, security protocols, and behavioural standards.
  • Detailed understanding of procedures related to radioactive discharges, waste management, environmental controls, and emergency response.
  • Experience in overseeing safety management systems, including Permits, Operating Instructions, and Health Physics Instructions.
  • Practical application of company policies, IRRs, and relevant health and safety legislation.
Qualifications
  • City & Guilds Level 3 or higher in Radiation Protection (or equivalent NVQ).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Eligibility for SC-level security clearance, including five years of UK residency and successful background checks.
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification.
