Be a part of Hemisphere’s Central Services team by providing first-class customer service support to our various departments, employees, and managers across the following disciplines: Health & Safety, Compliance, and Business Administration.
The role will involve:
As the H&S Advisor, under the Direction of the Head of HR & Compliance, you’ll be responsible for developing and implementing the Health & Safety strategy, provide expert guidance on H&S matters, Conduct Site Inspections and Risk Assessments, and Investigate Incidents to ensure compliance with Regulations and internal standards.
This role involves promoting a strong Safety Culture, Training Staff, and Continuously Improving Hemisphere’s Safety Framework and Performance.Working with the H&S Administrator and Maintenance team, you’ll also plan, implement, monitor and review protective and preventative safety measures.
You will also ensure our existing H&S safety standards (HSG65) are met and maintained, as well as highlighting and supporting any future accreditation requirements (i.e., ISO 45001 Certification), as the business area grows. You will need to drive motivation & innovation to ensure efficiency, accuracy to ultimately ensure performance targets are met.
Strategy and Compliance:
Develop and implement H&S strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and internal standards.
Conduct site safety inspections, audits, and detailed risk assessments to identify and mitigate hazards collaborating with key stakeholders to;
- Carry out Risk Assessments and consider how risks could be reduced.
- Outline safe Operational Procedures which identify and consider all relevant hazards.
- Carry out regular site inspections to check Policies and Procedures are being properly implemented.
- Regular on-site presence for proactive coaching of operators.
- Ensure working practices are safe and comply with legislation.
- Ensure equipment is installed safely, and support the H&S Administrator with the Property and Asset Register.
- Organise the safe disposal of hazardous substances when required.
- Work together with the H&S Administrator to manage Contractor Management across all sites including, Inductions, Issue Licence to Work & Permits to Works.
Lead investigations into incidents and accidents, ensuring lessons learned are shared and embedded into practice.
Training and Coaching:
Deliver and coordinate H&S training sessions and provide ongoing coaching to support teams and contractors on best practices.
- Lead in-house training with Managers and Employees about H&S issues and risks.
Advisory and Support:
Act as the primary H&S contact for delivery to teams and stakeholders, providing specialist guidance on areas such as fire safety, hazardous materials, and occupational health risks with utilisation of own knowledge, research, and 3 rd Party support.
- Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery and occupational diseases.
- Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the employer’s industry.
- Attend Suffolk & North Essex Occupational Safety Group (SNEOSG) Committee Meetings, Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) webinars, or training courses and read professional journals.
- Develop and implement a ‘Toolbox Talk’ Programme and deliver across all sites monthly.
Performance Monitoring:
Monitor, report, and drive improvements in overall H&S performance.
- Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements.
- Record incidents and accidents and produce statistics for Management using Citation H&S System.
- Produce Management reports, newsletters and bulletins.
- Develop and implement a Reward and Recognition scheme for improving Safety Culture.
You will need to have:
- To be successful in the role you’ll need to have:
- A strong H&S background in Warehousing, Logistics and Transport (10 years+).
- Qualified to NEBOSH Certificate/Diploma Level /or IOSH Level 3 Certificate/6 Diploma.
- Have a blend of soft and technical skills.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills to explain H&S processes to employees and management.
- Excellent communication, coaching, and teamwork skills.
- Negotiating skills to ensure stakeholder buy in across different levels.
- Ability to collaborate amongst different stakeholders.
- Empathy – increasingly, H&S is expanding to include worker wellbeing and preventing mental ill health.
- The ability to understand and analyse complex information and present it simply and accurately.
- Organisation and time management skills.
- Digital skills in order to produce reports, analyse data and engage with new software (e.g., Atlas Citation H&S System).
- Ability to work with a high degree of initiative and attention to detail.
- A flexible approach to work.
- Strong knowledge of legal requirements and government regulations.
- Experience in implementing H&S Management Systems, Conducting Audits and Inspections is essential.
