Emergency Planning Officer

Objective of role

Can you keep calm in a crisis? Are you good at anticipating what could happen next? Are you organised, passionate and keen to make a difference?

If so, you could be just what we\'re looking for in an Emergency Planning Officer, part of the Emergency Planning team. The team works alongside colleagues across the Councils, external partner organisations, and the public to ensure the Councils fulfil their obligations under the Civil Contingences Act.

You\'ll play a direct role in keeping both the Councils and the boroughs of Richmond and Wandsworth ready to respond and recover should the worst happen. With an area that stretches from the centre of London to its edges, you’ll have a diverse range of risks and emergencies to prepare for, making for a varied and interesting workload, with plenty of new challenges and projects to get involved in.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Emergency Planning Officer, your day-to-day work will involve:

  • designing and delivering training and exercises
  • reviewing and improving response plans
  • collaborating with external organisations such as the emergency services and other emergency planners from across London
  • working with local voluntary sector organisations to build community resilience
  • helping to develop new capabilities that increase our preparedness

You\'ll be part of a supportive team and will work regularly with colleagues in other departments.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Whether you come from an emergency planning background or not, we\'d love to hear from you. We\'re really interested in the skills you\'ll bring to the role, so to be shortlisted for interview we\'ll be looking for evidence of your:

  • Experience of maintaining good relationships with stakeholders, particularly with community, voluntary and faith sector organisations
  • Strong organisational skills and an ability to bring new ideas to the team.
  • Ability to interpret guidance and develop action plans.
  • Confidence working in a project delivery environment with rapidly changing priorities.
  • An understanding of the aims and objectives of emergency planning and business continuity.
  • Familiarity with the Joint Emergency Services Interoperability Principles (JESIP) and Civil Contingencies Act (2004).
  • Experience of using the Microsoft Office packages including, but not limited to, Word, Excel and Power Point.

The primary office base is in Wandsworth, with hot-desking available in Twickenham. We can usually accommodate home working 2-3 days a week, depending on the work taking place. The successful candidate will be part of an out of hours response rota, which attracts an additional allowance.
