Security Consultant

Job Description

A Security Consultant will enable clients to clearly understand their exposure to security threats/risks, and implement pragmatic and cost‑effective controls. This includes assessing risks at the technical or system process level and measuring the associated business impact via document review or structured questionnaires.

They may also lead client interviews and small investigations, create risk assessments and reports, or security assessments or workstreams within wider projects. They will translate framework controls into business requirements in straightforward situations, while applying standard framework or relevant BAE Systems IPR/standard approaches. They will work with account teams to identify new opportunities and support the production of quality proposals or participate in business growth related customer presentations.

Works under general direction within a framework of accountability; exercises substantial personal responsibility and autonomy; uses discretion in identifying and responding to complex issues. Escalates when issues fall outside their framework of accountability. Plans, schedules and monitors work to meet objectives and quality targets.

Influences customers, suppliers and partners at project level. Makes decisions which influence project and team objectives. May have some responsibility for others. Engages with cross-functional teams to ensure customer and user needs are met. Facilitates collaboration between stakeholders and participates in external activities related to their specialization.

Work includes a broad range of complex technical or professional activities in various contexts. Investigates, defines and resolves complex issues. Applies creative thinking concepts to deliverables.

Core Duties

Accountabilities

  • Understand and explain risk exposure to cyber security threats/risks and help implement pragmatic and cost‑effective controls.
  • Identify, manage and treat risk to a client's information and information technology assets.
  • Support client interviews and investigations, while managing risk assessments and reports.
  • Translate framework controls into business requirements in straightforward situations, applying standard framework or relevant BAE Systems IPR/standard approaches.
  • Work with account teams to identify new opportunities and support production of quality proposals.

Delivery Effectiveness

  • Source and apply collective knowledge to current engagement to achieve greater efficiency/consistency.
  • Agree project approach with stakeholders and prepare realistic plans (including quality, risk and communications plans); track activities against the project schedule and manage stakeholder involvement.
  • Demonstrate ability to use role‑relevant tooling at an advanced level.
  • Demonstrate independent thought, judgment and creativity in client or internal engagements.
  • Ensure own projects are formally closed and, where appropriate, reviewed and lessons learned recorded.
  • Take on discrete team management responsibilities.
  • Understand the commercial impact of scope changes and escalate to manager where appropriate.
  • Close down projects with minimal support where appropriate and document lessons learned.

  • Contribute ideas, be a team player, raise concerns timely, and maintain a positive team spirit.
  • Prepare and run simple project team/internal meetings; keep to main points and drive decision making.
  • Build collaborative relationships and influence within the team; respect others' viewpoints and needs.
  • Identify needs for collaboration and support or build teams to achieve business goals.

Strategy, Analysis & Context

  • Understand the importance of pre‑positioning key stakeholders to influence decision making.
  • Show flexibility, creativity and innovation in generating solutions and recommendations.
  • Summarise key problems and create coherent actions that add value for the client.
  • Conduct information gathering interviews up to middle management level, listening actively and controlling interview development.
