Job Description

Joining the Assystem Environment Consents & Engagement Practice as a Senior Environmental Consultant, you will be part of our established Environmental Management service offering.

The initial role involves working as an onsite Environmental Manager for the Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station infrastructure project. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the completion, submission, and assurance of environmental consents and permits, including discharge consents
  • Authoring and updating the Construction Environmental Management Plan and linked discipline plans
  • Understanding the marine environment, developing and maintaining Marine Method Statements and Navigational Risk Assessments
  • Supporting project ecologists to raise awareness of site constraints and mitigations
  • Liaising with local stakeholders, authorities, Environment Agency, contractors, and consultants
  • Ensuring proper waste management, including reviewing waste transfer notes, hazardous waste, reporting waste volumes, segregation, and waste testing
  • Advising the project team on environmental risks and compliance, attending meetings, and leading environmental updates
  • Conducting site environmental inspections and audits to identify and mitigate risks, including pollution prevention
  • Providing toolbox talks and training on environmental matters such as protected species and spill kit use
  • Reporting and investigating incidents or near misses, and closing actions

Job Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

  • Associate membership of a relevant professional institute (e.g., IEMA, CIEEM)
  • Understanding of environmental risks and opportunities in construction, infrastructure, property, or energy sectors
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; capable of leading, developing, managing, and motivating teams
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including problem-solving and negotiation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivated with initiative
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and projects simultaneously
  • Ability to build and maintain client relationships
  • Full membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional institute / Chartered Environmentalist
  • Masters degree in a relevant field
  • Work experience in construction, infrastructure, property, or energy sectors

Typical Work Activities / Key Accountabilities:

Senior Consultants may work independently or within multidisciplinary teams, managing their tasks effectively. Support from specialists and senior staff is available as needed.

Responsibilities may vary depending on the client and project stage, often involving multiple projects and clients.

Key tasks include:

  • Environmental project management: conducting site inspections, compliance audits, developing management processes, interpreting data, managing consents, advising project teams, liaising with regulators
  • Sustainability strategy: conducting appraisals, developing action plans, leading sustainable design reviews
  • EMS development: developing and implementing ISO14001 systems, policies, procedures, audits, and training
  • EIA: reviewing and drafting EIA chapters for planning applications
  • Ecology services: assisting with habitat and species surveys, report writing, data analysis, managing sub-contractors
  • Environmental Permitting: managing permits and consents from authorities

Additional duties include business development and bid writing.
