A local government authority in England seeks a Principal Road Safety Engineer to lead initiatives aimed at reducing road traffic casualties. This role involves managing road safety schemes, analyzing collision data, and supervising a team. The ideal candidate will have extensive road safety expertise, experience in project management, and the ability to work under pressure. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about saving lives and has the expertise to shape and implement road safety projects and policies that prevent injuries and promote safe travel in Gloucestershire.
You will lead a team tasked with reducing road traffic casualties in Gloucestershire, managing road safety schemes, analysing collision data, overseeing speed management initiatives, providing safety reviews of highway design proposals, and undertaking Road Safety Audits.
You will work with us to implement road safety strategies and meet casualty reduction targets, leading a programme of Road Safety schemes that includes project management and commissioning. You will manage budgets and provide regular updates.
You will supervise, mentor, advise, and support team members, assisting the Road Safety Manager to ensure continuing team development and strong teamwork.
You will collaborate with other Gloucestershire Council teams and external partner organisations to deliver road safety solutions.
You will engage with local, regional, and national interest groups to evolve, innovate, and promote safe, healthy, and sustainable travel for all road users.

You will have knowledge and appreciation of the Safe System and experience in managing colleagues and projects. You will have experience of monitoring budgets and reporting their status. You will have expert knowledge of road safety, ensuring highway design meets standards and guidance and provides safe solutions for all road users.
You will have significant experience in collision data analysis and deriving solutions to road safety issues. You will be qualified in accordance with GG 119 and able to undertake Road Safety Audits.
You will have excellent organisational skills and be able to prioritise workloads to maintain service levels.
You will be able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, with a customer‑focused nature to build relationships with stakeholders.
Hybrid working arrangements are available for many of our roles, allowing teams to work in a way that suits them, balancing service need and individual choice, with a mix of both remote and office working.
For this post, we offer a 10% welcome payment to candidates who join us (50% of this payment is received upon joining, the remaining 50% is paid upon completion of the probation period).
