Grade: Clinical – Full Time, Permanent

We are advertising for both a Clinical Lecturer (8620) and an Associate Clinical Professor (8621), but only one position is available.
Role Summary
Associate Professor – contributes to teaching, research, administration, academic citizenship, and clinical service1.
Key focus areas:
- Leading development and enhancement of major teaching programmes.
- Building and sustaining an international research reputation.
- Driving departmental and university‑wide research, knowledge transfer, and public engagement.
- Providing honorary clinical service with the Birmingham Community Health Care Foundation Trust.
Primary Duties
Education
- Advance the pedagogical knowledge base through resource development, practice‑based research, and innovative digital approaches.
- Design curriculum at module and programme level, ensuring contemporary, inclusive, engaging, and academically challenging content.
- Engage students in curriculum design and publish evidence of effective practices.
- Contribute to debates about education policy through internal and external publications, societies, and conferences.
- Develop an external profile by engaging in quality assurance, examining, and supporting education at other institutions.
- Play a key role in student recruitment and admission.
- Lead development of teaching, learning, and assessment policies and strategies.
- Act as an education mentor to colleagues across the School/Department/College.
- Implement and evaluate new learning and teaching methods.
- Address knowledge transfer and enterprise impact that enhances student experience and employability.
- Own teaching duties, including examining, marking, programme proposals, and research‑informed practice.
Research
- Manage and lead research activities, publishing international, world‑leading work.
- Provide expert advice internally and externally.
- Peer‑review academic journals and grant applications.
- Lead sustained impact and public engagement, influencing national and international policy.
- Develop novel methodologies and techniques appropriate to the research focus.
Management / Administration
- Contribute to department and school development, including research and teaching assessment.
- Lead international engagement initiatives at the school or college level.
- Shape strategic research and learning/teaching plans.
- Advance knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement activities.
- Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion through policy and practice.
- Lead and support committees, task forces, and external committees.
- Project‑manage teams for new initiatives and recruitment drives.
- Contribute to widening participation, school outreach, and public understanding of the discipline.
- Support administrative activities within the university.
Citizenship
- Identify and address wellbeing issues within the institution.
- Own collective challenges and collaborate on solutions.
Person Specification
- Full‑time clinical academic – a dentist who is a specialist graduate, fully registered, and licensed to practice with the GDC, participating in clinical appraisal and revalidation.
- Demonstrated competence in learning and teaching, and in management and administration.
Learning and Teaching Requirements
- Outstanding teaching profile with evidence of impact and quality, underpinned by scholarship.
- Proven use of varied teaching methods and assessment strategies that promote flexible, distinctive, and current learning.
- Significant contribution to new programmes, learning approaches, and educational resources.
- Track record of high‑value impact on student experience and employability.
Research Requirements
- PhD is mandatory; required level of research experience for a research and education role.
Management and Administration‑Related Requirements
- Demonstrated success in corporate life of the School/College/University, active committee participation, and collaborative teaching.
- Active promotion of equality and diversity to internal and external stakeholders.
- Use of data to identify equality and diversity issues.
- Experience developing interventions to address these issues.
Clinical Service
- Participate in paediatric dentistry clinical activity guided by the department service lead.
- Continue to develop paediatric dental skills.
- Provide personal outpatient treatment sessions with access to inhalation sedation.
- Engage in formal and informal teaching programmes for junior dental and nursing staff.
- Collaborate with BCHCT, surrounding community trusts, and Birmingham Children’s Hospital to strengthen paediatric dental service networks.
Health and Safety, Occupational Health and DBS
- Safe recruitment practice and pre‑employment checks will be undertaken before appointment.
- All successful applicants must obtain Occupational Health clearance and a DBS check prior to appointment.
