Responsibilities
  • Work with the team to undertake waste service collections for residents and businesses in Oxford City, including refuse and recycling, ensuring daily rounds are completed to work standards and timescales whilst delivering high levels of customer service and ensuring politeness, courtesy and professionalism at all times.
  • Load recyclables and waste from a variety of locations (e.g. houses, flats, schools, shops and businesses) from a range of containers (boxes, domestic bins, wheeled bins, plastic sacks, packaging waste) and use in‑cab technology to report any collection and compliance issues.
  • Undertake other collections as directed, including removing bulky household refuse, fridges and freezers, clinical waste and other collections from trade premises.
  • Ensure spillages and loose items around collection and disposal points are cleaned up/removed.
  • Drive the refuse lorry on the round, and comply with all organisational and legislative requirements in respect of driving and operating a heavy goods vehicle, particularly with regard the Health and Safety requirements and record‑keeping. Ensure the vehicle is clean and tidy inside and out, undertake safety inspections on a daily basis and take responsibility for the safe manoeuvring of the vehicle on the round and at waste transfer sites/recycling centres, particularly when reversing. Act as ‘banksman’ for other drivers as required.
  • Ensure regular communication with households and businesses, as directed, by, for example, delivering correspondence and placing advisory stickers and tags on bins.
  • Undertake other duties that may be required by the management team, in particular to deal with special circumstances such as snow clearance and flood prevention.
  • Participate and contribute to an ethos of teamwork and flexibility within the team and assist with the training and support of new and temporary/agency members of the team, in particular ensuring new colleagues undertake safe working methods and are familiar with routes.
  • Undertake all duties in accordance with the Direct Services Quality Assurance scheme, work instructions manual, Driver’s Handbook, health and safety requirements and safe working procedures, ensuring fitness to work at all times and reporting promptly any issues that may compromise these standards.
  • Undertake work on Public Holidays, weekends and ‘catch‑up’ days as necessitated by the needs of the service.
