Business area
In the UK, Global Banking focuses on four main business areas: Corporate Clients Group, Capital Markets, Low Carbon Transition Group and Transaction Banking. This role sits within Capital Markets, which provides a fully integrated offer across debt and equity and works closely with issuer and investor clients.
The Syndicate team within Capital Markets is the hub for execution of all new primary issuance within the function, across products including Sovereigns Supranationals and Agencies (SSA), Financials, Corporates, Growth Markets and Euro Medium Term Notes (EMTNs). It interfaces between Debt Capital Markets and private-side teams, and Sales, Trading and other public-facing functions. Through interaction with issuer clients and trading and sales (investors), the Syndicate team crystallises origination ideas and, once a mandate is awarded, manages the execution process and residual risk associated with the transaction.
Job purpose
As a Director, the role holder will be accountable for completing highly complex analyses, reviewing work from more junior colleagues, and working with both LCM and LFCM to enable corporate borrowers to access liquidity across the capital structure primarily in EUR, USD and GBP. The role will lead workstreams and drive strategy in the team to support the business in achieving its objectives.
Key responsibilities
- Accountable for utilising detailed knowledge of Corporate Loan Syndicate as a subject matter expert to review and complete highly-complex activities to facilitate the Syndicate function’s objectives and to deliver strategic and commercial client solutions.
- Provide specialist support to the team and clients to diagnose and resolve issues, develop models and procedures and monitor trends. When precedent is not set, contribute to establishing new approaches or policies, personally or through their teams.
- Leads and takes ownership of tasks such as
- Taking responsibility for the execution of Corporate business, working with LCM and the broader syndicate team/marketing representatives to generate demand for new and existing products, including client visits to investors and issuers. Contributes to developing new and innovative products and services to meet client requirements;
- Prepare syndicate memos and attend credit committees to support underwriting of bank facilities;
- Develop and maintain bank/investor relationships to stay abreast of market trends and demand dynamics related to syndicate loan and SSD markets. Undertake pricing and execution of syndicated loans and SSD loan new issues;
- Work with sales to promote/execute transactions with banks/investors;
- Provide CM with market colour and highlight issuance opportunities;
- Follow Risk & FICC procedure when underwriting risk in excess of syndicate delegation limit (where relevant);
- Update issuers directly on market evolution and developments, both macro and pricing;
- Monitor aggregated risk and P&L, and adhere to relevant trading limits;
- Coordinate and encourage effective interaction of the Syndicate team with appropriate operations and risk areas (e.g., market risk and compliance). Contribute to the operational permanent control framework.
- Lead commercial conversations and interactions with clients on complex transactions, identify new business opportunities, and coordinate business development strategies with other lines of business, sectors, and geographies to maximise revenue and client success. Maintain dialogue with competitors to ensure and enhance good working relationships.
- Attend relevant regulatory and product/skill training and keep up-to-date with market and Compliance issues.
- Act as a senior escalation point for the Corporate Loan Syndicate team, defining appropriate interventions to deliver a quality service to clients.
- Support the Syndicate function activities as a line manager where applicable, including development of junior colleagues (regular and annual reviews) and supervising delegation of work to ensure effective and profitable output. Promote and champion conduct.
Requirements
- Professional qualification with in-depth understanding of Global Banking and BNP Paribas products and capabilities; deep expertise in syndication.
- Expert knowledge of policies, procedures, regulations and legislation relevant to the Syndicate function; ability to apply this knowledge to improve BNP Paribas processes and practices.
- Excellent analytical and modelling skills; able to translate technical concepts and provide specialist guidance. Capable of forming a broad point of view and market convictions.
- Exceptional risk awareness; evaluates consequences of solutions on people, systems and the organisation. Anticipates changes and adapts accordingly.
- Strong experience in managing key stakeholder relationships; excellent negotiation, support and influence skills. Strong people management abilities and ability to manage performance to deliver client objectives.
- Strong client focus, commercial and relationship management skills. Excellent written and spoken English to articulate technical issues clearly across the business.
- Attention to detail and ability to review and improve the work of junior colleagues.
- Computer literacy with Microsoft Office; experience with investment banking databases (e.g., Dealogic, Bloomberg).
- Commitment to BNP Paribas values and ability to operate within the Bank’s Compliance framework and external regulations.
