Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry for The Cedars

Job Summary

We invite applications for a Consultant Psychiatrist post located on The Cedars, Wonford House, Exeter. The Cedars houses two acute inpatient wards caring for adults of working age with a combined bed base of 32 beds. The post holder will be based on one of the wards and responsible for a maximum of 16 patients, with dedicated private office, PC/laptop access and a medical secretary. The post is suitable for a first‑time NHS consultant, an existing or post‑retirement consultant, or an international candidate. Possibility for hybrid remote working depending on the post. Extra Programmed Activities (10 hours per week) are negotiable for clinical, research, innovation, teaching, medical management and other special interests.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients managed informally and those detained under the Mental Health Act in the capacity of Responsible Clinician.
  • Provide leadership to the wider urgent and inpatient care pathway and participate in ensuring efficient, patient‑centred care flow through the Trust.
  • Participate in the on‑call rota and cross‑cover for colleagues.
  • Support professional development through 2.5 Supporting Programmed Activities (10 hours a week), monthly peer group, quarterly medical advisory committee, and local postgraduate meetings.
  • Work under and support the development of a clinician‑led clinical record system.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Approved Clinician status at appointment (or supported to obtain).
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at interview.
  • Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
  • Prior experience working in a Community Mental Health Team and psychiatric practice in a range of settings.
  • Experience of audit and understanding of clinical governance principles.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduates (essential).
  • Excellent communication skills and evidence of leadership in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development, multidisciplinary and multi‑agency working, respect, inclusiveness and diversity (essential).
  • Desirable: MRCPsych, other professional qualifications (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT), CCT in General Psychiatry, research aptitude, evidence of teaching skills, experience in clinical supervision, management training or experience.
