A local government council in the City of London is looking for a part-time Caretaker to help maintain safe and welcoming communal areas within estates. The role requires reliability, physical capability, and strong interpersonal skills, allowing caretakers to directly engage with residents and foster community well-being. Previous formal qualifications are not essential, but a commitment to safety and pride in work are crucial.
Help keep our estates clean, safe and welcoming – and make a visible difference every day.
As a Caretaker at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), you’ll play a vital part in looking after our estates – making sure they’re well maintained and safe for the people who live there.
You’ll be based in the Borough 18 hours a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. Whether you’re working on the frontline or behind the scenes, you’ll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.
This is a hands‑on role with plenty of variety. You’ll be responsible for keeping communal areas clean and tidy, carrying out regular inspections, reporting and resolving issues, and making sure buildings remain safe and well looked after. You’ll also remove hazards and deal with anything that could pose a risk to residents.
You’ll be working independently across one or more sites, taking ownership of your day‑to‑day tasks and knowing when to escalate something that needs extra support. Every building is a little different, so you’ll be assigned clear responsibilities for the one you’re working on. We’ll give you the tools and training to feel confident in your role – including hands‑on experience and in‑house courses such as BICS training.
You’ll use technology to complete checks and record your work, and there’s always someone on hand if you need help or advice.
We’re not looking for formal qualifications – what matters most is that you’re someone who’s active, reliable, and takes pride in a job well done. You’ll be physically capable of manual work, like lifting, bending and moving items, and happy to be on your feet throughout the day.
You’ll also be someone who enjoys working with people. Whether it’s helping a resident or reporting a concern, you’ll be friendly, calm and respectful – while always prioritising safety and care.
We’ll support you to grow your skills and confidence with ongoing training and a chance to progress into more senior roles. Our teams are friendly and approachable, with regular team meetings, monthly one‑to‑ones, and a strong culture of looking out for each other.
You’ll be given your own work phone and email so you’re always connected to support if you need it. Senior caretakers are available to assist when things get busy, and you’ll never be far from the office if something needs sorting in person. There’s also time set aside for breaks and shared lunches, giving you space to connect with the team.
Kensington and Chelsea is home to diverse communities, thriving businesses and unique local places. Everything we do is focused on supporting our residents, strengthening our approach and creating a fairer borough.
As a competent and caring Council, we take pride in our work every day, ensuring our services are delivered with care and competence. We listen to our residents, act with integrity and work together to build a borough that is greener, safer and fairer for all.
In this role, you’ll be one of the key people making sure our estates are clean, safe and cared for – helping to create a better living environment for everyone. Your work will directly reflect our commitment to delivering services that are responsive, respectful and rooted in community needs.
We’re all in – are you? If you share our values and have the skills to contribute, we’d love to hear from you.
