Join our Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick team as a Bid Manager and you’ll deliver complex work that really matters to our business and the world around you. As Bid Manager you will lead, manage and coordinate all aspects of a bid ensuring high‑quality, competitive proposals are delivered to the customer in a manner consistent with the Balfour Beatty Management System. You will establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with customers, partners and the bid team.
What you'll be doing
- Formulate and agree bid strategy with senior management to secure profitable orders.
- Build relationships with customers or their representatives to gain a clear understanding of their requirements.
- Manage and maintain the approved bid budget.
- Oversee and lead the preparation, coordination and delivery of presentations to customers.
- Attend key customer meetings and industry events (e.g. bidder open days).
- Oversee the establishment, production and implementation of bid management processes, including PPC papers, tender settlement documentation, bid management plans, bid programmes and decisions on major supply‑chain partners.
- Liaise with supply‑chain members to formulate aspects of the bid offer.
- Produce written technical, legal and financial contributions to bids and maintain document control and register of clarification responses.
- Record proceedings of meetings and decide on consultant selection and scopes of services.
- Carry out customer intelligence gathering and competitor SWOT analysis.
- Ensure full knowledge of the tender requirements and compliance of bid deliverables.
- Stay informed of company best practice and innovation within bids across the business stream.
- Liaise with co‑sponsors and internal bid steering committee for large and multiple bids, including preparation of Gate papers.
- Lead the presentation of Tender Settlement meetings for large and multiple bids and obtain approvals.
- Lead the handover of secured business.
- Maintain a Project Risk Register.
- Implement appropriate digital toolsets for cost take‑off and other estimating activities, such as 5‑D cost planning.
- Live the Balfour Beatty Values and ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
Who we're looking for
- Previous experience managing bid services in construction and engineering – specialist experience may be required for some streams.
- Understanding of framework procurement principles and experience with current forms of procurement.
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as RICS, CIOB, RIBA, ICE, MICE or MIStructE and a valid CSCS card.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships under time pressure.
- Customer‑centric approach with a knack for spotting opportunities in invitations to tender.
- Strong desire to pursue innovation, development and continuous improvement, with a focus on the customer and relevant business. Good IT, maths and bid writing ability required.
- Knowledge of best‑practice solutions and optimisation of innovative ideas, plus a grasp of Lean Construction and 5‑D cost planning.
- Understanding of BIM, how to read and assemble BIM models and produce reports from them.
