Job summary

A multidisciplinary environmental consultancy located in Bedford is seeking an enthusiastic graduate or early-career ecologist. This position offers hybrid working, where the successful candidate will undertake Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, conduct protected species surveys, and prepare detailed technical reports. Ideal for someone passionate about ecology with a degree and willing to learn. Qualifications

  • At least qualifying membership of CIEEM or working towards it.
  • A degree in a relevant discipline is required.

  • Driving licence and access to a car are necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Preliminary Ecological Appraisals.

Are you passionate about understanding the natural environment, and keen to progress a career in ecology consultancy, with the benefits of working as part of a multidisciplinary team?

We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate or early-career ecologist, ideally with some practical experience, to join our friendly team of ecologists, landscape architects, environmental planners, and arboriculturists.

The position is based in Bedford and is an excellent opening for someone looking to develop their skills and knowledge, with future opportunities for advancement. We would also consider applicants who may not meet all the requirements, but can instead show how they are ambitious, good at learning and keen to engage in ‘on-the-job’ training that we can provide.

A wide variety of work will be involved over a range of sectors, typically including:

  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals
  • Protected species survey and assessment
  • Reptile and/or newt survey and translocation
  • Biodiversity Net Gain Calculations
  • Contribute to & prepare technical reports and project documentation

Requirements:

  • At least Qualifying membership of CIEEM or working towards an application
  • A degree in a relevant discipline
  • good interpersonal skills to enable collaborative working
  • Good writing skills with attention to detail
  • A driving licence and access to a car to travel to project sites
  • A basic understanding of the planning system

Beneficial:

  • Good knowledge of current and developing wildlife policy and legislation
  • Knowledge of GIS, CAD and/or Adobe software programmes
  • Experience of writing technical reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisal
  • Relevant professional ecological experience (min 6 months)
  • Experience and ability to carry out Phase 1 habitat surveys/UK Habitat Classification survey with reasonable botanical skills
  • Experience and ability to survey the more common protected species, such as reptiles and badgers

Applicants should be self-motivated, flexible, organised, good at working both independently and as part of a team and able to deliver work to a high standard. Good verbal communication skills, a flexible approach to work and taking proportionate responsibility are important.

We are currently operating a hybrid working arrangement, with a minimum of three days in the office, with remainder eligible for remote work, subject to agreement.
