Job description
What will you be doing as our new Archaeologist?

You will be responsible for producing archaeology and heritage inputs for the strategic pipeline project, reporting to the SPA Archaeology Discipline Lead. This role involves producing archaeological risk-mapping using ArcGIS and MS Excel, informing the production of historic environment desk-based assessments, and supporting the design and management of archaeological surveys and evaluations. You will also author written deliverables, produce supporting maps, and collaborate with the SPA Archaeology Team to ensure technical consistency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce archaeological risk maps identifying areas of high, moderate and low risk.
  • Utilise ArcGIS software independently.
  • Collaborate with other SAT members and share regular updates.
  • Use risk-mapping data to produce historic environment desk-based assessments.
  • Attend site walkovers and visit archives and record offices to gather baseline information.
  • Inform the design of archaeological surveys and evaluations using gathered data.
  • Apply experience of archaeological fieldwork to inform design.
Skills, Experience and Behaviours
  • Ability to use ArcGIS software to produce mapping and datasets.
  • Demonstrable experience producing archaeological and historic baselines, impact assessments and deliverable figures.
  • Collaborative mindset facilitating the sharing of historic environment information across teams.
  • Personal responsibility for supporting programme delivery, risk-based approaches, cost control and programme management.
  • Flexibility to work across several projects and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, and strong organisational/analytical skills.
