Job description
Overview

Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest. The Release Engineering team is part of Affirm’s Developer Productivity team and plays a critical role in ensuring that our services are built, tested, and delivered to production with speed, reliability, and safety. We design and operate release operations and processes that empower hundreds of engineers to confidently ship changes into the distributed systems that power Affirm’s financial products. Our mission is to establish world-class release practices and tooling, enabling engineering teams to deliver features quickly while maintaining Affirm’s high bar for quality, compliance, and availability.

As a Release Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of engineers and coordinators that run the pipelines, orchestration frameworks, and automation that power every release across the company. You will be responsible for scaling tooling and processes that underpin Affirm’s global platform while collaborating across engineering, product, and compliance teams to continuously improve how we deliver software at scale. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will shape technical strategy, grow talent, and raise the bar for how we release distributed systems at Affirm.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead a team responsible for the end-to-end operation of releases at scale, ensuring services are delivered safely, reliably, and on time
  • Define and execute the vision and roadmap for Release Ops, balancing speed, compliance, and stability across Affirm’s distributed systems
  • Drive operational excellence by continuously improving release processes, incident response practices, and reliability during deployments
  • Partner with engineering and product leadership to identify needs related to deployments and developer productivity
  • Drive the strategic roadmap for expanding deployment safety and tooling by collaborating closely with CI/CD and other Developer Productivity teams
  • Build and evolve release tooling, orchestration, and observability systems that reduce friction and eliminate risk in shipping software
  • Set and uphold quality and compliance guardrails that meet both regulatory requirements and internal standards
  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineers and release coordinators, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and innovation
What We Look For
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in engineering management preferably within DevOps, Release Engineering, or Infrastructure
  • Demonstrated success in operating releases at scale, with proven ability to balance release velocity, reliability, and compliance
  • Strong technical background in distributed systems and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, etc.)
  • Experience building and scaling release operations, CI/CD pipelines, and service orchestration frameworks
  • Track record of leading cross-functional initiatives that improved release quality, developer experience, and system reliability
  • Ability to balance deep technical insight with people leadership, guiding architecture decisions while mentoring engineers
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of aligning diverse stakeholders on release priorities and outcomes
