Volunteer Visitors Needed Across Somerset

We are looking for volunteers to be individually matched with a sight impaired person in their local area. We are looking for Volunteer Visitors to provide regular companionship and support to a sight impaired person in their local area.

Responsibilities
  • Provide regular companionship and support to a sight impaired person in their local area (couple of hours once a week or fortnight).
  • Assist with activities and practical support to help maintain independence and improve quality of life for someone affected by sight loss.
  • Attend training provided by Somerset Sight; no previous experience is necessary.
  • Disclose DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) as part of the volunteering process.
  • No travel or accommodation arrangements are required beyond reasonable expenses; all reasonable expenses are paid, including mileage.
Requirements / What volunteers need
  • Disability awareness and willingness to help people with sight loss.
  • Ability to commit to a regular schedule (e.g., weekly or fortnightly).
  • Must be able to engage with adults in the local community.
About the Organisation

Somerset Sight currently helps 3,500 visually impaired people and their families every year, delivering vital practical and emotional support.

Working In Partnership. We value links with other organisations and have a good working relationship with Somerset County Council, which contributes towards the cost of running our Visiting service and other services. We have good links with other sight loss organisations including RNIB, Action for Blind People and Guide Dogs for the Blind. As an independent local charity we are members of Visionary — linking local sight loss charities. We started in 1919, and in 2019 we were very proud to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
