Within Urology Services, an 18 months fixed term opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist role. We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist in Urology to join our multidisciplinary team. This is a pivotal role supporting both surgical and cancer pathways for urology patients, ensuring seamless, compassionate care across the service.

Main duties of the job
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist will contribute to the Urology Service acting as a key worker to provide support and information for patients. The post holder will promote and maintain high professional standards of nursing care to patients.
  • The Clinical Nurse will practice autonomously and in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to assess, plan and implement patients care and provide highly specialist advice.
  • The Specialist Nurse will promote a culture that recognises and meets the specialists and complex needs of urological, whilst ensuring that performance targets are met.
  • To ensure a person-centred approach to care for people affected by cancer within the Urology speciality.
  • To contribute to improving the care and outcomes for Urological patients by leading and implementing best practice and ensuring all care is evidence based.
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide leadership and manage the Urology Unit and Urology Nursing team.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist will be professionally accountable for their actions and provide leadership within their defined area of speciality. They will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist will be able to communicate effectively complex condition related information in a sensitive manner to provide reassurance and support to patients.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with the multi-professional teams locally, and with referring units.
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist as the skills to undertake comprehensive medical assessments and as the ability to carry out urological tract assessments and able to interpret the results.
  • To request diagnostic imaging in line with local and national guidelines and within IEMER guidance.
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist will initiate and contribute to improving patients pathways within the service.
  • Act as patient advocate where relevant, facilitating informed discussion concerning treatment options and ensuring informed consent.
  • To provide specialist advice to support the assessment, planning and management of care to patients presenting with a Urological problem.
  • Lead and participate in nurse led clinics to meet the patients need and service demand.
  • To promote liaisons between the Trust and other external services to ensure seamless care across different care settings.
  • Participates in research and Audits within specialist area and applies research findings to clinical care.
  • To provide clinical expertise to the departmental team, acting as a role model in the delivery of patient care.
  • To lead, support, supervise and teach staff, within the specialist area.
  • The post holder is expected to always act in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • To provide support and care for the patient and his/her family respecting their need for privacy and dignity.
  • Provide and source patient information and ensure meets national guidance.
  • To facilitate the collection of correct data inputted into SOMERSET in line with the National LWBC matrix.
  • Ensure the delivery of evidence-based nursing care in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct within the clinical care area as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Develop and provide education programs to patients, carers, multi-disciplinary teams, nursing and medical staff.
  • Act as a role model exploiting at every opportunity to enhance the knowledge of others in issues relating to specialty.

Managerial

  • Manage the Nurse led Urology unit and nursing team.
  • To lead on developing guidance and implementing new initiatives to improve the service.
  • To manage and take responsibility to ensure adequate provision to deliver an effective and efficient service within agreed budgets and resources.
  • Ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations.
  • To ensure Specialist Nurse staffing within the Service is managed and supported appropriately.
  • Key to establishing good working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team and cancer networks.
  • To maintain a flexible approach to the role and ensure provision of an effective and efficient service within agreed budgets and resources.
  • To support the process of Clinical Supervision within the Service.
  • Conduct staff appraisals within the Service.

Education

  • To implement and participate in the identification of the education of multi-professional team to ensure they meet the needs of patients.
  • To identify, assess and meet the educational needs of the patient and their family/carers.
  • Attend and participate in service professional forums locally and nationally to support best practice.
  • Attend Directorate management/ Cancer board meetings.
  • To continue own professional development in line with NMC guidelines and NMC.
