Job summary

A leading engineering company in Whitstable is seeking a Toolroom Engineer to support production and maintenance of tooling. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years' experience in toolmaking, strong skills in CNC machining, and qualifications in Mechanical Engineering. Qualifications

Purpose of the role

To support the in-house requirements of the business for the production, repair and maintenance of tooling.

To manufacture small quantities (typically 5 off) piece parts for NPI, sample and testing purposes.

Duties and responsibilities

Producing new and refurbished tooling and / or making improvements to tooling (both moulding and assembly of products)

Developing new and innovative tooling to aid manufacture

Machining tooling and NPI piece parts to exact tolerances

Liaise with design, manufacturing and process engineers to advise with tooling design and process improvement.

Carries out such other duties that may be reasonably requested.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • A City and Guilds, or equivalent, qualification in Mechanical Engineering
  • Time served apprenticeship within a tool making environment
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working as a Toolroom Engineer, Toolroom Technician or Toolmaker
  • Working knowledge and experience of mould tool manufacture
  • Working knowledge and experience of assembly tool manufacture
  • CAD/CAM knowledge and experience
  • Working experience of CNC mills and lathes
Technical Knowledge
  • Knowledge of machining to exacting tolerances using various methods, i.e. grinding, turning and milling, etc.
  • Knowledge of tool manufacture
  • Ability to work to technical drawings, CAD models, verbal instructions and/or damaged components
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements
  • Knowledge of injection, transfer and compression moulding
  • Programming of CNC mills, Lathes, EDM machines
Skills and Competencies
  • Ability to demonstrate skills required to produce detailed tooling in any of the following: milling, turning, grinding (cylindrical and/or surface), spark eroding and/or bench fitting
  • Ability to manage workloads/deadlines
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team and to develop ideas with other engineers.
  • Willingness to further train and learn new skills.
  • Leading projects
  • Model shop, prototyping or small batch work experience
