King Highway Products is looking for a practical, detail-focused Technical Design Engineer to join our small yet expanding team. This key role is responsible for producing accurate technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and manuals that support the design, build, and ongoing improvement of our specialist traffic management vehicles.

Collaborating with cross‑functional teams, you will help formalise existing designs, create CAD drawings and system schematics, and ensure all documentation meets compliance and safety standards.

This role offers a great opportunity for someone with a strong technical background in vehicle systems who enjoys improving and standardising real‑world designs. You’ll be given the tools, support, and autonomy to make a genuine impact on how our vehicles are documented, built, and maintained.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Produce detailed electrical wiring diagrams and system schematics from existing systems, recommending improvements where appropriate.
  • Create and maintain CAD drawings for vehicle bodies, layouts, and component placement, based on established builds.
  • Generate simple hydraulic system drawings for cushions and light board operation.
  • Develop and maintain technical build documentation, user manuals, and service‑level instructions to support production, fault finding, and aftersales.
  • Produce and manage accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), ensuring parts specifications align with compliance and build requirements.
  • Work with production teams to translate designs into build‑ready documentation and ensure manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with key internal stakeholders and third‑party suppliers to ensure accurate and compliant system integration.
  • Ensure all technical designs comply with safety, industry, and regulatory standards (e.g., Chapter 8, TSRGD, DVSA).
  • Maintain a structured and accessible database of drawings, BOMs, and technical records for all vehicle builds.
  • Review existing builds to identify and implement design improvements and standardisation opportunities.
  • Support compliance documentation and product improvement initiatives, refining legacy designs and component selections.
  • Assist in the creation of training materials and service documentation to aid ongoing vehicle support and maintenance.
Experience, Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Proven experience in vehicle electrical and/or mechanical design, ideally within commercial or specialist vehicle manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) for mechanical and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to produce and interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and BOMs.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle safety standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent attention to detail with strong documentation and manual‑writing skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work with production, engineering, and service teams.
  • Self‑motivated and organised, with the ability to manage multiple live projects.
Benefits
  • Competitive rates of pay
  • Company life assurance (death‑in‑service benefit)
  • 33 days holiday (including bank holidays)
  • Christmas shut‑down
  • Free on‑site parking
  • Secure employment with opportunities for progression in an established, industry‑leading business
  • Supportive working culture with long‑standing and knowledgeable team members
  • Ongoing training and development opportunities
  • Access to Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) including confidential counselling
  • Team social events and recognition initiatives
