Technical Business Analyst (Automation & AI)

Location: Huddersfield

Department: Transformation & Change

Salary up to £60k depending on experience

Buy It Direct is a leading UK e-commerce retailer. We've built the business from the ground up to become one of the UK's largest and most successful online retailers. As we continue to expand, we're looking for a talented Technical Business Analyst (Automation & AI) to help shape the future of our systems and processes.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a fast-paced, forward-thinking environment where your work will have a direct impact on business transformation.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a proactive problem-solver to act as the vital bridge between our business units and our technical teams. In this role, you won’t just manage requirements; you will be an Efficiency Hunter, actively seeking out opportunities to deploy automation and AI to revolutionise how we work.

If you are translator who speaks both human and code—comfortable strategising with department heads in the morning and discussing API endpoints with developers in the afternoon—we want to meet you.

Your Mission

You will serve two distinct but connected functions:

1.The Bridge: Translating vague business needs into concrete, scalable technical requirements.

2.The Catalyst: Proactively identifying bottlenecks and solving them using low-code tools, automation, and AI.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Technical Advocacy & Solutions Design
    • Translate Business Needs: Act as the primary interface for business users. You will take requests like "I want X" and translate them into rigorous technical requirements (User Stories, Functional Specs) for our development team.
    • Architecture Gatekeeper: Prevent "tech debt" by working with users before requests hit the backlog. You will ensure we are building scalable, sensible solutions, not just quick fixes.
    • Backlog Ownership: Triage incoming requests, prioritize high-impact fixes, and manage stakeholder expectations with empathy and clarity.
  2. Process Improvement & Automation
    • Proactive Discovery: Conduct "Gemba walks" and deep-dive sessions with business departments to observe workflows and identify repetitive tasks ripe for improvement.
    • Build Automations: Don’t just document the problem—solve it. Design and implement automation workflows to reduce manual effort.
    • AI Champion: Lead the charge on internal AI adoption. Identify practical use cases for LLMs, ML and other solutions then train teams on how to leverage AI safely to enhance productivity.
The Ideal Candidate

You function as a diplomat for the development team and a hero for the business units. You have exceptional negotiation skills and are comfortable saying "no" or "not yet" to stakeholders without damaging relationships.

Skills & Experience
  • Requirements Engineering: Proven experience translating business ideas into technical specifications.
  • Process Mapping: Ability to visualize current states and design future states (BPMN, Visio, Lucidchart, or Miro).
  • AI Literacy: A practical understanding of Generative AI/LLMs and how to apply them to real-world business workflows.
  • Communication: You can explain complex technical constraints to non-technical stakeholders clearly and kindly.
Why Join Buy It Direct?
  • A chance to shape technical solutions within one of the UK’s largest online retailers
  • Career development, learning opportunities, and hands‑on impact from day one
  • Friendly, innovative team culture and excellent staff discounts
