Job Overview

Substantive ENT Head and Neck Consultant

Applications are invited to join our expanding ENT team. The successful candidate will have extensive head and neck experience and will complement the department’s needs and future plans. The post joins 16 existing consultants and requires an on‑call commitment.

High‑quality specialist care, particularly in cancer, renal and cardiac services, has earned a national and international reputation. We are at the forefront of research programmes and new surgical procedures including keyhole heart valve surgery and research into diabetes, genetics and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. We also play a vital role in teaching the next generation of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Located in Leicester, the hospital offers a balanced lifestyle and is within easy road or rail access of London, the Midlands and the North.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff.
  • Shared responsibility for beds on wards 9, Day ward, Kinmonth Unit and paediatric wards at LRI; shared responsibility for beds on the Medical Day Case Unit at LGH.
  • Perform clinical sessions as outlined in the job plan.
  • Engage in teaching, research and administration.
  • Develop the service with other ENT Consultants at UHL.
  • Participate in adult and paediatric on‑call rota (1:8 frequency).
  • Undertake managerial duties associated with patient care and the running of the Clinical Department.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Adult ENT patients at LRI are managed on Ward 9 (18 beds, mixed adult ward shared with plastic and maxillofacial surgery). The Kinmonth Unit provides high‑dependency care for airway patients and head and neck surgery. A dedicated Adult Surgical Day Ward sits adjacent to theatres. The department operates 35 inpatient and day‑case lists with dedicated paediatric theatres. Outpatient services are supported by audiology at Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Elective Care HUB at Leicester General Hospital. The East Midlands Planned Care Centre at Leicester General Hospital includes two theatres and multiple recovery beds.

ENT support a busy Children and Adults Emergency department and community clinics in Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Oakham, Market Harborough, Hinckley and Coalville.

Person Specification – Qualifications and Training
  • MB BS or Equivalent.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of interview.
  • FRCS(ORL-HNS) or Equivalent.
  • Current BLS Certification.
  • Fellowship in Head and Neck or evidence of plans to undertake fellowship.
  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Higher degree (e.g., MSc, MD) or equivalent.
  • Special interest in robotics welcomed.
Experience and Clinical Skills
  • Fully trained in Otolaryngology (ENT) surgery.
