Oceanskies Group was founded in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and provides crew employment and yacht registration services to clients across the world. The Oceanskies bespoke cloud-based systems powers the group and requires continued development and maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Project Manager, Head of Development and CTO to ensure that tasks and projects are delivered on schedule;
- Drive innovation by mentoring the software development team;
- Help motivate the software development team to ensure they remain productive, efficient and deliver high standards of work throughout projects enabling deadlines to be met;
- To cover the Head of Development’s line management responsibilities for the Software Developers in the Software Development Team as required (during annual leave and/ or sickness absence);
- Design, develop and maintain complex PHP applications built in both custom frameworks and Laravel;
- Write clean, maintainable, and well tested code that follows best practice;
- Capable of understanding legacy systems and refactoring and adapting logic into clean, modern code for greenfield development;
- Able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences; and
- Promote a positive and professional culture amongst employees, focussing on inclusivity and commercial acumen.

- Have 5+ years of professional software development experience working with Laravel;
- Strong understanding of MVC architecture and SOLID principles, with a commitment to adhering to DRY practices in all development work;
- Understanding web security best practices and how to apply this to the code;
- Solid understanding of version control systems including Bitbucket and/or GitHub and CI/CD pipelines (Bitbucket Pipelines and GitHub Actions);
- Experience of working with AWS (including ECR, ECS, RDS, S3 and EKS) and React (or Vue); and
- Ability to work on-site in Southampton at least 2 days per week.
Desirable
- Degree in relevant subject such as Software Engineering or Computer Science;
- A good working knowledge of PHP/MySQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript for legacy software support;
- Knowledge of Docker environments;
- Experience with microservice architecture;
- Experience with eCommerce;
- Interest in the Maritime and Yachting industry;
- Good understanding of project coordination; and
- Experience using Claude Code (or Similar)
