Senior Technical Safety Engineer – Wood Process & Energy
Location: Stockton‑On‑Tees, England, United Kingdom (Hybrid working: 3 days in office at Stockton or Glasgow)
Wood Process & Energy is seeking an expression of interest for a Senior Technical Safety Engineer to support process safety engineering services to our operations business.
Responsibilities
- Produce Technical Safety engineering deliverables as required in support of work scopes delivered within a portfolio of projects.
- Develop safety engineering philosophies, design HSE plans, safety specifications, equipment specifications.
- Arrange and participate in formal process safety assessments such as HAZID, ENVID, HAZOP, Bow Tie Analysis and SIL target setting studies, and generate study reports.
- Lead formal process safety studies.
- Input to, and participation at, project design assurance reviews such as P&ID reviews, HAZCON, and constructability reviews.
- Carry out active and passive fire protection assessments including fire risk assessments, fire protection philosophies, fire water demand calculations, hydraulic calculations using PIPENET spray/sprinkler module and performance monitoring.
- Carry out consequence analysis including gas dispersion, thermal radiation and blast modelling.
- Hazardous area classification following industry codes and guidance (BS 60079, EI15, IGEM SR/25).
- Develop and implement functional safety management plans (BS EN‑61511).
- BAT and ALARP demonstrations.
- Management of specialist consultants.
- Produce and review specifications, data sheets, schedules, study reports, and design calculations; ensuring they conform to engineering quality, competence and project management systems.
- Provide technical support to projects and sites as required.
- Attend client meetings and communicate issues with the lead engineer as required.
- Adhere to and comply with relevant discipline‑specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement.
- Ensure self‑awareness of relevant regulatory framework, legislative changes, initiatives and industry technology developments.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of process safety and environmental engineering methodologies, software systems, and design practices as they relate to FEED, Detail Design, Construction, Commissioning and plant start‑up.
- Assist Project Management in assessing risks both qualitatively and quantitatively, while making major engineering decisions.
- Awareness of international codes and standards.

Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant Engineering Discipline.
- Chartered Engineer.
- Relevant project experience.
- Fluent in written and spoken English.
- Applicants must be able to obtain a UK security clearance.
Desirable
- Post‑graduate qualification in process safety‑related subjects.
- Awareness of process operations.
- Competent user of industry‑standard software packages such as PIPENET, DNV PHAST, exSILentia, PHA Pro, HAZOP Manager.
- Certified Hazard Study Leader.
- Demonstrable experience in leading safety studies (HAZID/HAZOP/LOPA).
- DSEAR risk assessment experience.
- CDM awareness.
