Job description
The Service

Strategic Housing Services covers a wide remit including Private Sector team, Homelessness and housing options, Asylum seeker and refugee, Gypsy and Roma Traveller, Affordable housing and policy. The team reports to the Housing Services Manager.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Private Sector Initiatives Officer to join our Strategic Housing Team to assist with the delivery of a Selective Licensing Scheme.

We are looking for:
  • A highly motivated and enthusiastic person
  • Who is a great teamplayer
  • NVQ level 4 or equivalent (ideally in Housing or Environmental Health)
  • With recent experience in this field to show a thorough knowledge in relevant context.
  • Experience of selective licensing schemes including enforcement.
The role requires:
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills, being able to communicate with people on all levels including council members, colleagues and members of the public.
  • A good level of effective IT skills and the ability to understand and develop the use of ICT to achieve work objectives.
  • The post holder will be based in Blyth area, working with community groups and other stakeholders in the area to contribute to the overall regeneration and improvement of the area.
  • The post will provide a first point of contact for private landlords and stakeholders (by all access channels), dealing with enquiries on selective licensing (the licensing of private landlords in order to rent their homes in certain areas of Northumberland) and guiding through the licensing process.
  • The post holders will be responsible for Housing Conditions in the Private Rented Sector within selective licensing areas. Specifically, the enforcement element of Private Sector Housing functions in relation to Parts 1, 3 and 4 of the Housing Act 2004 and associated legislation.
  • The post holder must hold a valid UK Driving Licence

The post holder will be working in a small team based in Blyth. This is a full-time role on a permanent contract. The selective licensing scheme was approved in October 2024, and we require someone with knowledge and experience in the field to assist us to further develop and deliver the scheme for the duration of the licensing period.
