Job description
Overview

The starting salary is £43,294, which includes allowances totalling £2,928. The salary is broken down as £40,366 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £42,071. Plus, a location allowance of £1,928 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: Belvedere and Ponton Road

Fleet Services keeps the Met on the move. Making sure that the police can be quick to detect, respond to and prevent crime, in a way that builds public trust and confidence. Serving the UKs most diverse city, we have over 220 different vehicles to support all operational commands. These include armed response vehicles, HGVs, patrol cars, motorbikes and pedal cycles. We strive for a fleet that is safer, smarter and cleaner.

Responsibilities
  • Quality Processes and Procedures Support the team lead in developing, maintaining, and improving quality processes and procedures across MPS workshops and suppliers.
  • Quality Inspections Conduct regular inspections and investigations on vehicles and equipment, both internally and at supplier sites (PSPs, body shops), working with staff who performed the work.
  • Coaching and Guidance Visit PSPs and body shops to coach on required standards and inspection protocols, providing technical support as needed.
  • MOT Testing Maintain MOT tester status and stay current with industry standards to support quality control.
  • Inspections and Investigations Assist with SII inspections and investigations, identifying and recording vehicle-related issues.
  • Data, Information and Reporting Complete and verify reports and data entries; ensure others inputs are accurate in MPS systems, escalating issues to the team lead when necessary.
  • Wider Asset Assurance Support the Maintenance and Quality team in fleet asset assurance activities on and off MPS sites, including travel.
  • Development/Training Own personal development and stay updated on relevant standards and legislation.
  • Support Colleagues Share knowledge and skills with apprentices and less technical staff.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Fleet Services Understands fleet operations and service delivery.
  • Maintenance and Repair Proficient in all vehicle platforms and systems (mechanical, hydraulic, electrical) across makes. Skilled in maintenance procedures, safety assessments, warranty processes, diagnostics, and workshop equipment use and calibration.
  • Police Equipment Knowledge of police warning systems, surveillance tech, specialist conversions, and unique onboard equipment.
  • Health & Safety Familiar with HSG261, roadside repair safety, COSHH, and relevant industry regulations.
  • Prioritise Work Able to adapt and prioritise tasks to meet changing demands.
  • Accountability Demonstrates drive, resilience, and responsibility in challenging situations.
  • Communication Strong interpersonal and communication skills across all levels.
  • Problem Solving Works independently or collaboratively with a methodical, thorough approach to resolving issues.
Experience
  • Industry experience at least 4 years relevant experience within the vehicle maintenance and repair industry
  • Certifications/Apprenticeship NVQ Level 3 in vehicle maintenance and repair (or equivalent).
  • Manufacturers Working with a wide range of manufacturers
