PRISON CUSTODY OFFICER

Location: HMP Rye Hill, Willoughby, Rugby (within reasonable travelling distance of Rugby, Northampton, Coventry, Nuneaton, Hinckley, Leicester, Daventry, Kettering and Leamington Spa)

Type: Permanent, Full Time – 40 hours per week, various shifts

Salary: Starting £31,228.38 per annum, with increments at year 1 and year 2 to £33,307.01. During the 10‑week training course salary is £27,324.84.

About the Role

The role of Prison Custody Officer is key to the effective running of our prison. You will provide structure and routine, ensure prisoners engage in work or education, and maintain a safe, secure and structured environment. There are no specific qualifications or prior experience required – the essential qualities are integrity, resilience, strong communication skills and the ability to treat prisoners with dignity and respect.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure prisoners complete morning work and are engaged in education or work programmes.
  • Maintain safety and security within cells and communal areas.
  • Support prisoners in their rehabilitation and facilitate their reintegration into society.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including weekends, evenings and nights, on a rolling pattern with at least 30 days notice for changes.
  • Participate in the Level 3 Custodial Management qualification and benefit from a structured Development Pathway to progress to middle management.

Training & Development

The 10‑week Initial Training Course (ITC) comprises Control & Restraint, First Aid, Interpersonal Skills, Health & Safety and a shadowing period with qualified PCOs. You will also undertake a Level 3 custodial management qualification supported by a coach, mentors and line management.
