Job description

Harlands Community Primary & Nursery School was built in 1996 in Ridgewood, Uckfield, and is responsible for educating children from the ages of 2 to 11 in the local area.

About this opportunity

They are looking to recruit a co‑opted governor. As members of the Full Board of Governors, governors work closely with the headteacher, supporting them and challenging them. The role will include:

  • Attending governing board meetings, which normally take place about six times a year and are usually held outside school hours in the early evening.
  • Looking at information and evidence on the school’s progress and discussing it with school leaders.
  • Visiting the school to see the plans working in practice, and listening to the views of staff, pupils and parents.

Training and ongoing development is provided by East Sussex Local Authority and through GovernorHub. This is all explained in the governor induction programme.

Governors need to be committed, inquisitive to question and analyse, and willing to learn. They need good interpersonal skills, an appropriate level of literacy and be sufficiently numerate to understand basic data.

It is preferable if applicants do not have children or grandchildren at the school – as they already have parent‑elected governors and are looking for a balanced mix. They are seeking a commitment of four years – governors can be re‑elected thereafter. A DBS check will be required.
