SLB Cambridge Research is a distinctive marquee-like structure dominating the High Cross site on the western outskirts of Cambridge, England. Altogether, there are more than 930m2 of laboratory space and offices for more than 100 scientists, technicians and domain experts.

Job Summary

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to model fluid flow and heat transfer in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) – a rapidly evolving technology that aims to unlock geothermal potential beyond conventional locations. This is fundamental research with direct industrial impact, delivered in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct high-fidelity simulations of fluid flow and heat transfer in fractured media under realistic EGS conditions.
  • Quantify the key physics governing heat extraction efficiency and overall EGS performance.
  • Present results to peers, stakeholders, and at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to publications and internal reports.
  • PhD in fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, engineering, or related physical sciences.
  • Demonstrated expertise in numerical modelling of fluid flow and heat transfer (PDEs, discretisation, verification/validation).
  • Ability to develop mathematical models, making assumptions explicit, and clearly communicate results.
  • Publication record in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with CFD software (e.g., OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent, or COMSOL Multiphysics) and resource-intensive simulations.
  • Background in multiphysics or subsurface flow modelling (porous/fractured media).
  • Experience with model reduction techniques, data-driven analysis, or uncertainty/sensitivity analysis.
