Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a paralegal looking to build a career in employment law. The role offers varied and stimulating work, close contact with clients, and the opportunity to learn from a highly regarded team. The successful candidate will assist on both contentious employment tribunal matters and non-contentious HR and contractual work, playing a key part in the delivery of excellent client service.

Our team advises both employers and employees across a wide range of sectors, from SMEs to large corporates, charities, public bodies and senior executives. We handle a broad spectrum of contentious and non-contentious employment issues, often in a fast-paced and high-stakes environment. We are now looking for a motivated Employment Law Paralegal to join our team of 10 busy and experienced fee earners.

At BTO, you will be part of a collaborative and supportive environment where your contributions are valued. We offer:

  • High quality, hands on legal experience
  • Ongoing mentoring and development from senior lawyers
  • Opportunities for progression within a well-established, forward thinking firm
  • Hybrid/flexible working arrangements (where applicable)
  • A friendly and inclusive team culture
  • A competitive benefits package

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist solicitors with employment tribunal claims from instruction through to final hearing
  • Liaise with clients, third party representatives, ACAS and Employment Tribunals
  • Conduct legal research and prepare summaries for fee earners and clients
  • Assist with non-contentious work including contracts of employment, consultancy agreements and staff handbooks
  • Assist with Settlement Agreements, including supporting solicitors from initial enquiry through to final signing and feeing.
  • Take initial enquiry calls from new clients and record relevant information
  • Coordinate the onboarding process including AML checks, conflict checks and file opening
  • Ensure a professional, responsive and client focused approach from first contact onwards
  • Suggest and help implement solutions to streamline service delivery using legal tech or case management tools
  • Contribute to marketing initiatives including content creation (blogs, updates and podcasts) and events
  • Build rapport with clients and contacts, helping to develop ongoing relationships and repeat business
  • Stay up to date with employment law developments and proactively share insights with the team

Candidates must have a strong interest in employment law and a good understanding of employment tribunal processes. While not essential, a paralegal qualification in employment law is desirable. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, together with strong organisational ability and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. You must also be a team player who works well with colleagues at all levels and have the ability to use initiative and seek guidance when required.

Previous paralegal experience within an employment law or litigation would be advantageous, together with familiarity of key employments legislation and experience of drafting legal documents and correspondence.
