Every day you’ll be part of a team giving infants the very best start in life. Work closely with Maternity and Child Health colleagues in a truly multidisciplinary environment. Take charge of the daily running of SCBU, supporting staff and ensuring smooth, safe, and compassionate care. While SCBU will be your base, you’ll have opportunities to contribute across the wider Child Health service. Develop your leadership skills and clinical expertise in a supportive, forward-thinking Trust.

  • Lead the shift with calm professionalism, keeping the unit running smoothly.
  • Support your team to deliver safe, high‑quality care every day.
  • Manage daily pressures while ensuring the ward operates effectively and safely.
  • Champion standards by upholding Trust policies and best practice.
  • Create a learning culture through appraisals, development plans, and mentoring.
  • Drive safe discharges by coordinating complex cases with confidence.
  • Promote innovation by embedding new procedures and research into practice.
  • Develop others with appraisals and career support for junior staff.
  • Be the go‑to advisor for nursing colleagues and the wider MDT.
  • Safeguard medicines with secure storage and administration in line with regulations.
  • To report, document and evaluate accidents and ward incidents, informing the Ward Manager.
  • To participate in development of clinical supervision within the ward.
  • Develop ways of working to enhance the care and communication within the unit with MDT members, patients and their relatives.

The Child Health directorate looks after all manner of childhood hospital admissions and outpatient pathways from 0-18 yrs. The SCBU team is responsible for the care of infants over 32 weeks gestation who require either Transitional Care services, Special Care or High Dependency Care after delivery.

The Unit also supports infants and their families who delivered or were transferred outside of Torbay for care and then return to our services.
