Lead Mechanical HVAC Engineer – Equans UK & Ireland

EQUANS is seeking a Lead Mechanical HVAC Engineer to support the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The role is a permanent full‑time position (40 hours per week) with a competitive salary, benefits and opportunities for professional development.

General Overview
  • Carry out proactive maintenance, repairs and inspection of mechanical building services in accordance with standards, procedures, legislation and guidance.
  • Represent the company respectfully and professionally.
  • Take responsibility for all aspects of regulatory and HTM‑specific maintenance of heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning systems.
  • Execute planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical HVAC assets and associated building services as per the PPM programme and personal competence training.
  • Respond promptly to ad‑hoc breakdown requests as identified by supervisor/manager or as required by the site contract.
  • Assist with minor upgrades, adaptions and systematic fault finding on malfunctioning equipment in a logical and safe manner.
  • Adhere to safe working practices, statutory and company guidelines.
  • Operate access equipment, hand and power tools safely in line with health & safety and manufacturers’ guidelines.
  • Use personal protective equipment in compliance with health & safety and infection control procedures.
  • Maintain records, written or electronic, as required.
  • Work flexibly alongside other trades and colleagues.
  • Participate in call‑out/standby rota after the qualifying period.
  • Collaborate with wards and departments to minimise disruption.
  • Undertake training to develop skills and meet service requirements.
  • Carry out risk assessments on‑site as instructed by supervisor/manager.
  • Co‑operate with partners and colleagues to deliver a customer‑focused service.
  • Use initiative to make appropriate decisions, including out‑of‑hours.
  • Complete job cards and other paperwork to required standard.
  • Complete work within allotted timeframes.
  • Carry out any other tasks commensurate with the role.
Additional Skills
  • Technical advice and problem solving on water systems and heating issues.
  • Experience with other mechanical bias systems.
Impact

The maintenance engineer performs planned preventative and reactive maintenance across the healthcare estate, ensuring statutory and contractual obligations are met while providing excellent service to customers.

Complexity

The role undertakes duties within the engineer’s training and competency. The on‑site Estates management team provides specialised technical advice and liaises with appropriate management to facilitate engineering works.

Qualifications or Required Experience
  • Completed a recognised Mechanical apprenticeship.
  • Prior work experience within a complex maintenance environment.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Maintenance Services or equivalent.
  • Experience with AHU’s, chilled and portable water systems, A/C units, etc.
  • Pipe fitting experience (desirable).
  • PPM, reactive work and supported project works.
  • Authorised Person Ventilation.
