Job description

Windermere Golf Club is seeking an experienced and proactive General Manager to lead the day‑to‑day operations of the Club and drive its continued success and development. Reporting to the Management Committee, the General Manager will be responsible for delivering exceptional service to members and visitors, ensuring operational efficiency, and supporting the long‑term strategic goals of the Club.

Location: Cleabarrow, Windermere, Cumbria, England, LA23 3NB

Situated in the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Lake District National Park, Windermere Golf Club is a thriving members club and attractive destination for visiting golfers and societies. The Club is ranked in the top 200 golf courses in England, has over 600 members, and is host to over 10,000 visitor rounds of golf annually.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
  • Provide strong leadership to all staff, fostering a positive, professional, and service‑focused culture.
  • Manage recruitment, training, and performance of all employees.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, committees and members.
  • Ensure compliance with employment law, health and safety, and club policies.
Operations & Membership
  • Oversee daily club operations, ensuring a high‑quality experience for members and guests.
  • Manage membership administration, including enquiries, retention, communications, and engagement initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Heads of department (Course, Membership, Retail, and Bar/Catering Franchise Manager) to maintain excellent on and off course standards and customer service.
  • Monitor tee sheets, competitions, and visitor bookings to ensure smooth scheduling.
Finance & Business Management
  • Prepare annual budgets in collaboration with the Treasurer and Committee.
  • Manage financial performance, monitor income/expenditure, and implement cost controls.
  • Drive revenue across membership, visitor green fees, golf retail, food and beverage, and events.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting, invoicing, and adherence to financial procedures.
Strategic Planning & Development
  • Support the Management Committee in developing and delivering the Club’s Strategic Plan and long‑term goals.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements, new revenue streams, and member benefits.
  • Lead and manage projects that enhance the Club’s facilities, services, and sustainability.
Marketing, Communication & Community Engagement
  • Implement and oversee the Club’s marketing strategy, social media presence, internal and external communications.
  • Promote Windermere Golf Club as a premier destination for members, visitors, and societies.
  • Build strong relationships with local businesses, partners, and the wider community.
Skills & Experience Required:
  • PGA accreditation or recognised Golf Club Management training such as GCMA or CMAE programmes would be highly desirable.
  • Proven leadership experience in golf club management with a passion for delivering high standards of service.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting, reporting, and business development.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of golf retail, operations, membership, course management, and the wider golf industry.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.
  • Competence in relevant IT systems (booking, membership, accounting, website etc.).
