JOB DESCRIPTION: RETAIL RELIEF ASSISTANT
Travel to various shops according to company needs to cover staff days off and unplanned absences. This role would suit someone who likes variety. Your rostered shifts will be published two weeks in advance.
ROLE PURPOSE
To provide excellent customer service, support daily shop operations, and help maintain a clean, welcoming, and efficient retail environment. The Retail Assistant plays a key role in ensuring every customer leaves happy and the shop runs smoothly.
CUSTOMERS
- Provide consistently excellent customer service – our goal is for every customer to leave our shops satisfied every time.
- Acknowledge every customer immediately – be friendly, helpful, and smile.
- Pass any customer concerns or queries to your Retail Manager promptly.
- Aim to answer the phone within four rings.
- Build a positive sense of community with customers both inside and outside the shop.
TEAMWORK
- Support the team with a variety of tasks including:
- Serving customers and selling freshly baked products.
- Preparing sandwich fillings and checking in goods (when required).
- Displaying products attractively and ensuring price tickets are in place.
- Washing up, cleaning counters and shelves, sweeping, and restocking displays (from the drinks fridge to the crisp basket).
- Making up boxes, filling bag hooks, and keeping all areas clean, tidy, and hygienic.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude – be responsible, conscientious, professional, cooperative, cheerful, polite, motivated, and proactive.
- Take pride in your work and set a good example for others.
MONEY HANDLING
- Handle money responsibly and accurately to maintain consistent till accuracy.
- Maintain appropriate levels of change in the till.
- Follow all security procedures to ensure money, keys, and premises are kept safe.
- Accurately count and reconcile money daily before banking.
PRODUCTS
- Learn all product names and till categories.
- Ensure all goods are correctly priced and clearly ticketed.
- Rotate stock regularly and maintain freshness.
- Ensure no stale or poor-quality goods are sold.
- Manage waste responsibly and minimise product loss.
- Display goods to their best advantage under your Manager’s guidance.
- Promote daily offers and upsell additional products, including hot drinks.
- Suggest ideas for new product lines or promotional opportunities.
ADMINISTRATION & PROCEDURES
- Keep up to date with ordering paperwork and delivery records.
- Meet all required food safety standards.
- Complete daily temperature checks accurately.
CLEANLINESS & HYGIENE
- Follow all basic food hygiene and safety rules.
- Assist with cleaning tasks in both the shop and kitchen areas.
- Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and appearance – always look neat and presentable.
