Ready to learn a skilled trade and become a specialist in pipefitting? Our 4‑year Engineering Trades Apprenticeship is your gateway to mastering this essential craft while gaining hands‑on experience maintaining the Royal Navy’s fleet.

About the programme

As a Pipefitter Apprentice, you’ll be at the forefront of building and maintaining the Royal Navy’s fleet.

You’ll work on a variety of projects such as new builds, upgrades to existing vessels, and other commercial engineering projects. Throughout the programme, you’ll gain specialist pipefitting skills, including installing, assembling, fabricating, maintaining, and repairing mechanical piping that carries fuel, chemicals, water, steam, and air in various process piping systems.

In addition to technical expertise, the programme focuses on developing soft skills such as clear communication, effective teamwork, problem‑solving, attention to detail, and continuous personal development.

Your education/training

The apprenticeship combines on‑the‑job training with academic learning at Fife College.

Year‑by‑Year Breakdown
  • Year 1 – August to end of June: Full‑time study at Fife College with day release on site.
  • Year 2 – Full‑time work, applying and building on the skills learned in Year 1.
  • Year 3 – Full time work; if pursuing an HNC, attend college one day per week.
  • Year 4 – 100 % of your time in the workplace, focusing on completing logbooks and fulfilling all qualification requirements.

Upon successful completion, you’ll achieve a Modern Apprenticeship Qualification at SCQF and qualify as an Engineering Technician specialising in pipefitting.

Salary: Over £36,000 upon completion, with opportunities for higher‑level qualifications and career advancement within Babcock.
