The post-holder will deliver and contribute to the development of the maternal medicine service, working both as an autonomous practitioner and team member, delivering high quality, expert nursing care.

Main duties of the job
Main duties & responsibilities
  • Be a key member of the maternal medicine MDT and work collaboratively with the rest of the maternity team to support best possible patient outcomes.
  • Participate in joint specialist maternal medicine clinics, providing key nursing input. Support the other members of the clinical team and ensure the team are working to agreed guidelines and protocols within a clinical governance framework.
  • Assisting in the acceptance of referrals to the Maternal Medicine Portal, including determining their appropriateness and assisting in prioritization of referrals according to clinical need.
  • Provide a nursing outreach role in both the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, including assistance in carrying out specific investigations, treatments and interventions without direct supervision, including: investigations (e.g., bloods, blood cultures, ECG, ABG); management of peripheral and central lines; administration of medications (e.g., immunoglobulin infusions).
  • Assisting in the management of the acutely unwell patient including the provision of enhanced nursing care.
  • Providing outreach support to pregnant women admitted to the acute gynaecology ward and across LAASP providers (Aintree, Royal, Liverpool, Liverpool Heart and Chest/Broadgreen, Walton Centre and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre) as part of the maternal medicine team.

  • Provide psychological support at diagnosis and throughout the patient journey, acting as the patient’s advocate.
  • Proactively and independently refer patients to other disciplines when relevant, in accordance with local protocols and national guidelines.
  • Contribute formally and informally to education, training and development of midwifery, nursing and other professional groups. A key focus will be increasing staff knowledge of maternal medicine.
  • Act as a specialist resource for patients, ensuring they have a full understanding of their conditions, and interpreting complex information to ensure they are fully informed and supported in the decision-making process.
  • Contribute to the development of patient information leaflets, protocols, standards and guidelines.
  • Share information and introduce ideas to help promote quality and effectiveness of the department. Encourage new evidence-based approaches to practice and act as a change agent.
  • Ensure the environment of care is safe and appropriately equipped, and compliant with standards of hygiene, cleanliness and safety.
  • Ensure that all appropriate documentation is completed fully, accurately and legibly.
  • Provide proactive leadership to the maternal medicine team and act as a clinical role model.

  • Registered Nurse (with current registration)
  • First level degree (or equivalence through experience).
