Assistant Lawyer - Large Loss RTA

Role: Assistant Lawyer in the Complex Injury Claims Team.

Location: Manchester, United Kingdom

Description: This role offers an excellent opportunity to work in our Complex Injury Claims Team dealing with large loss claims. In this role you will assist two large loss lawyers on complex, high value RTA multi‑track claims. Experience of indemnity, liability and complex medical issues is required and excellent attention to detail essential. The role includes engaging with sophisticated senior claims handlers at long‑standing insurance clients and may include activities to enhance Keoghs’ profile. This is a full‑time, Manchester‑based role with expectations of one day per week in the office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with lawyers to manage a caseload of complex injury claims, including high‑value multi‑track claims valued over £100k.
  • Communicate with sophisticated insurer clients, address their queries, and provide updates as matters progress.
  • Conduct forensic analysis of voluminous quantum evidence, preparing chronologies, identifying anomalies and other relevant information across various sources and categories of evidence.
  • Use your knowledge of complex injury symptomology to identify relevant issues within medical records, instruct medical experts and draw key issues to their attention.
  • Critically analyse sources of liability evidence and identify gaps.
  • Draft concise technical advice on all aspects of claim handling, including reserves, indemnity, liability, quantum and causation issues, and claims resolution for strategy discussion with the lead lawyer.
  • Proactively identify next steps, discuss them with the lead lawyer, and take action as agreed.
  • Interview witnesses and draft statements.
  • Liaise with parties involved in claims including insured, insurer, witnesses etc.
  • Draft pleadings and application documents.
  • Instruct counsel and attend conferences, JSMs, mediations both remotely and in person.
  • Attend court in person or by telephone, attend trials, settlement conferences etc. as required.
  • Deliver agreed performance targets and quality standards.
  • Delegate assigned tasks to a Complex Injury Paralegal and support their development in technical ability and achievement of objectives.
  • Maintain case‑management systems with up‑to‑date information for clients.
  • Ensure compliance with SRA standards & regulations.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Qualified solicitor or legal executive, or proven relevant experience.
  • Experience of large loss cases involving complex medical issues.
  • Experience of indemnity, liability and quantum analysis.
  • Good advocacy skills.
  • Deep understanding of case law, litigation practice & process, and Court Practice Rules, with excellent communication skills.
